Each way and max of 2 boards per bag, then $25 per board bag on inter island hops.
2 boards roundtrip from LAX to Kauai with a stop in Honolulu = $390
Any ideas on a cheaper way to bring my boards?

if you want to skip the hassle
you can borrow some of mine here on oahu if you need to
don’t know 'bout kauai
maybe kokua and ambrose can hook you up
don’t know about your size though.
Aloha airlines
$50 per board from OC to Kauai each way
I took 2 boards in 1 bag
at the ticket counter counter they asked “how many boards?”
I replied " I have 1 board bag" I didnt lie, just didnt answer the question.
the counter person doesnt look in the bag and the oversized baggage checker or TSA doesnt check with the counter person to see if you payed fully they dont work for the airlines.
I payed $50 each way
The boards got a few bumps and brueses but that happens
Thanks Bernie, that’s very generous of you. Depending on the outcome, I may take you up on the offer. The dilema I’m facing right now is Griffin is making me a new 5-fin fish which I really hoped to bring to Hawaii and my wife has her favorite travel board that she wants to bring.
Another option would be to bring her board and then have Greg ship my new one to Kauai. That would knock off $85 right there.
Hey last year it was 80 per stick.
But they don’t charge for 19 tons of golf equipment…Sucks the big one.Herb
Thanks Ken,
Aloha is a good airline, our problem is that we have United miles that give us 2 free tickets. So we’ll have to stay with them. Nice to know about Aloha though.
Marc
you could still tell them theres only one board bag
leave one there for next time.
That’s actually a good idea. Although it means I’d have to leave the Griffin at home and take the nugget in it’s place as well as one of Karen’s longboards.
Hmmmmmmmm…
what’s the dimensions on your griff fish?
Both my brother and I have one.
I have a 6’6" Mandala quad and the 7/11 surftech McCoy Nugget
But all my personal boards are floaty for my weight and age(200lbs)
I also have the 6’8" firewire alternator, the 6’8" surftech Merrick Flyer and a 6’9" surflight.
If you are really into nuggets you could check out the 6’ or 6’8" Slipahs we have from Keone Downing he calls them his fish design but they look like nugget clones to me without the bottom.
and of course we have composite sandwiched wood skinned eps cored mistakes (I won’t say the C-word) in all kinds of crazy designs and sizes.
country should be breaking by then
Hawaiian’s your best bet from the westcoast and interisland cause they charge by the bag.
Keep us posted
still checking on them deals too…
Hi Bernie,
The dims on the Griffin fish are 6’4" x 21 1/4 x 2 7/8. He’ll be starting it soon but I need to send him a deposit first.
I’m really torn about what to do for a board in Kauai. We might just buy used boards when we get there and then sell them when we leave. It would be cheaper than renting boards and a helluva lot cheaper than shipping them. Or, we might bring a couple and just leave them there for next time.
I’m 190 lbs and am used to thick boards so yours sound good to me. What a great collection you have!
Thanks,
Marc
Yeah, we’ve been down that rode a couple of times ourselves. We’ve left one there a couple of trips ago and it seems to have solved at least part of the problem
Ambrose had a lot of good boards. The swapmeet on the north shore had a good selection as well. It sure is nice to ride your own boards though and get to test them out in better waves.
looks like my griff is just a tad smaller at 6’2" x 21" x 2 7/8"
http://www.swaylocks.com/resources/detail_page.cgi?ID=1622
but even with me being just a tad thicker 195-200, older at 51 and more out of shape
it still works just fine for me.
I think you’d want these fat nose thick designs to be as small as you can paddle them
The mandala quad is closer to the specs of your new griff
just that manuel uses a more classic cali straight outline and fin setup
But you being 190
means everything I ride should just about work for you…
I’m sure ambrose or some other kauaiswayer might be able to find a way to help out too.
even if you don’t bring any I’d at least plan on maybe taking something back you never know what might happen.
bring what you want, but give it away before you fly home. saves half the cost of shipping, and there are lots of kids/people who can’t afford a board…
rent is a four letter word that is a precursor to litigation
in our contemporary culture.
I dont rent em I let people use em
and they give me a donation.
that donation ranges from 15-35$ a day
depending on the quality of the board.
I will let you use a new board for 250.00 a day
that should cover the instant depreciation.
if your estate contacts me after your untimly demise
the board has been stolenthis may protect my children
from widows and orphans in need of ivy league educations
and exotic european automobiles.
the realities of buying a board and leaving it behind for me to sell
can be the most economical call…
…ambrose…
SrPato - not sure how much this would cost, but I have heard of folks using DHL or another larger shipping company to ship boards to surf destinations . . . might be worth a look.

Ambrose, this is beginning to look like the best option. We’ll have to wait and see as it closer to departure time (Oct 18th), and how sentimental my wife is about her board. I’m really looking forward to meeting you, Kokua and Oneula. Can hardly wait for the poke salad and REAL Portugese sausage. Yummmm…
Thanks to Epac, Obslop and the others for your ideas.
See you soon,
Marc
Herb is right, I remember my friend was bringing his guitar on, NADA. . . but this guy and his caddy brought two full on loads of golf clubs each, the check in people waved them on in with a smile up to 1st class. My homie got pissed when they flagged them through. He just went bonkers and screamed and rage, so they called security on us and kicked us out.
It was hard not to laugh because it seemed like it was movie or something. At least he didn’t fight anyone but he was amped enough to.
I decided I didn’t want to be left out so I started singing dynamite hacks version of boz in da hood while following him and security out. Funny times.
What was weird was several hours later the next flight they didn’t even check. Sometimes it was dependent on the guy … .
Of course this was pre 9-11 they might not let you bring anything weapon like . . . . . you can’t even bring water bottles or shampoo because they think you can sneak a chemical mix and mix it up while on board, and you have a bomb on hand.
I’ve heared of guys that get two larger boards and sandwich as smaller board inbetween, so when the airliners feel up your bag they feel two tails but don’t count the middle.
Also . . .
I was wondering about that . . . just fedex em to a friendly place or safe house . . . and fedex them back to your place . . .
thats cool the aloha in this thread.
Just an aside, i flew from new jersey to brisbane, with stops in LAX and sydney with three boards 2 long one short. Got charged $95 flying out of newark cause the 9’6" coffin weighed 78 lbs. Never got charged again, flew 30,000 miles with three boards, i guess sometimes it just boils down to luck. Flew contintental to LAX and then Qantas, only one rail got punctured on my bing GS.

depends if it’s business or personal
I fedex’d a 6’8" Horan to Shwuz in Corpus Christi
It cost me $230.00 one way from Hawaii
better to put it on a plane
But I hate traveling carry those huge bags around the airport along with the rest of your luggage.
