UPS!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Just got an order of two blanks shipped through UPS. They are dinged all to hell and the noses are broken off a foot+ from the tip. I can barely contain my anger. I called UPS and gave them the details. They said a representative will be contacting me. Anyone deal with this before?

that sucks a donkey! what kind of blanks EPS or PU? if they were clarks then big ouch.

They’re EPS. A friend of mine worked for UPS and said how they used to chuck boxes onto boxes, kick things, basically destroy everything. He said he wouldn’t be surprised if they’re destroyed. well…

Wayull-

UPS is usually pretty good about paying for stuff lunched in transit.

Next time though, double box the blanks, minimum. When we got boards shipped, we paid the $10-25 extra per board for double boxing, which cut down on the shipping dings somewhat. Not entirely, mind you, and shipping by truck freight can get very, very ugly…

hope that’s of use

doc…

I’ve shipped 3 or 4 boards with UPS. No problems yet. Yah never know. I bought the little insurance packet they offered me. mike

yeah ups seems to be pretty risky from my experience…i usually try to be looking for them when i have blanks showing up… ive had boxes looking like the truck ran over them… of course the blanks were broke… the ups lady says “well there supposet to have 2” of packing all around"… im like thats not going to help if you beat the hell out of them…you keep them…the big fragile and this side up signs on the box mean nothing to them…

ive seen them just kick the box out of the back of the truck…trust me you dont want to see what happens when they switch trucks here and there in transit…

i just try and avoid ups alltogheter, whether im shipping out or having stuff coming in…

what happened with that shipment then? did they pay for the blanks and/or the freight cost? or don’t i want to know?

If you are the customer, your supplier should help work it out. We have had a few shipments damaged or lost. Its just part of how things go – eventually, shipments get damaged if you do enough. Ask your supplier to pack “skins” (the sections between the cut eps) between and over the blanks – this can help.

Skins idea sounds pretty good. He said he packed them like he’s packed blanks for years and never any problems. But next shipment i’ll def ask to bulk it up. No word from ups yet. Just being impatient I guess. thanks.

The best shipping company I have come across for shipping surfboards is Pilot Air. I’ve only had one board messed up so far. It’s best to ship transfer to transfer station that way you don’t have more clowns handling your goods. The one time they did mess up a board it was one of my 60’s restorations for this guy. They ended up paying $1000.00 on the insurance claim. It took a little nussance factor to get them to pay…but they did pay.

UPS and Fed Ex are the worst way’s to ship anything large that you care about. You would have had better sucess shipping Amtrack for $30.00.

side bar: I’ve seen first hand experiences where boxes fall off of trucks, and other guys intentially run the fricking box over…or even worse, they steal the box. I know one guy that proudly wears a wrist watch that “supposedly fell off of a truck”…I got so pissed off at that guy, sitting around drinking beer, boasting about his find…last person I ever punched in the mouth, smug Mother F’er, Big Pu$$y too.

The amtrak idea is pretty interesting. Really only $30?

Oddly enough, you could also try sending it on The Dog - Greyhound Freight. They can be very good for bulky stuff intercity.

I’ll chekc it out. thanks

UPS just told me they will be refunding the cost of the blanks and freight.

They didn’t even come out to see them. Good deal. But do I dare trust them again?

oh yeah, the packing the ups worker suggested would have done nothing to stop the damage on that particular delivery of mine…trust me if you saw the box it had about 2 ft of the end smashed to hell…

also yes i did forget to mention- after i told her to just keep them , i went inside and called the company who i had orderd the blanks from… they had new ones on the way that same day , it diddnt cost anything extra as far as new shipping or for the replacement blanks… not sure who had to eat the cost in the end but that was between ups and the blank supplier… my opinion is ups was at fault…

the best thing to do is see the box when it arrives, and if anything looks even a little strange cut it open , have a look and see… if something is damaged you need to decide if its something you can work around or not

because lets say if you get 2 boxes, 4 blanks in each… and one box has 2 blanks that got damaged… you really cant just send back the 2 damaged ones …and probally not even just keep one box and send back the damaged box … both boxes will likely have to go back with ups even if one was fine…

a better company to go with…? im not sure, but ups is the last on my list.

9 times out of 10 it’s the ends and corners that are smashed. Grab some packing foam blocks, cheaper in 3" x 24" sheets, and cut to fit your corners. L shapes work nicely. The sides are easy to reinforce wherever you need to, using cardboard and a glue gun.

let me chine in here- ive worked for ups for 15 years–your lucky ups is paying that claim! if they come out and inspect the box i bet they will find something wrong with the packing job, and try to skip out on the insurance.i know just how they think. they can sqeeze a nickel so hard ,and a dime will pop out of it .ups shipping is pricey .shipping could cost as much as the blank esp. if they get you on a “audit” for the dimentional weight of "oversize "in wich case youll pay 30lbs rate for a 4 lbs blank if the total circumfrence + length up from floor is <84 inches. its best to order through a local dealer/ shaper and pay the mark up.they could use the money anyway =) ups has the worlds best logistics and shipping system hands down. but we are not designed to carry supper fragile items unless they are packed like a tank-- if packed correctly its a good deal on more exspesive items ,because yes you may pay shipping charges but you wont have to pay state taxes$$ if it came frome another state. just remember we give you $100 insurance free on any parcel, but if you want to insure it for more it will cost you 37 cents per each $100 dollars additional, but on most claims they will come out and nit pick at your packing job- dont slap a label on the raw blank and send it out like some shippers do with tires, and luggage. because we only insure the contents not the packaging . the truck loaders we have nowadays are legally retarded, they just dont care ,they will chuck 400 pounds off crap right on top of you package that has fragile stickers all over it, i see it every day.

I work at the UPS store, and we do the packing.

A surfboard blank just won’t survive… we probably wouldn’t even accept packing that thing.

It’s an odd shape and there’s no way to really make it safe to ship. We 99% of the time pack things pretty tight and so far as long as I’ve been there haven’t heard of any claims as our own faults…
