I just got a Hitachi Clark Foam planer, it’s used and didn’t come with any documentation.
I searched the archives and didn’t find any answers to my questions, so hopefully someone can help me out with these simple, almost embarassed to ask ?'s
The knob on the front to set the depth is it supposed to move freely? Why would you want it to?
What is the knob sticking out of the knob for?
How do I know if its the production model or hobbyist?
Is there a PDF of the manual floating around anywhere? (if there is then I won’t bother asking any other dumb ?'s)
extra control and to hold the other knob on (this reminds me of Bob & Doug McKenzie “take off, ya knob! eh?”)*see possible glossary addition below
check the label for SB (sealed bearings)
I don’t recall seeing a PDF of the manual, but unless you are looking for a part number I don’t think it’s of all that much help – my recollection is that its a Hitachi manual for the stock planer, not “as modified by Clark Foam” (not that I’m a great reader of manuals…)
That’s what I was afraid of. I don’t know if I should say for fear that I got ripped off, anyway, I paid $130. Its in really good shape, the blades are sharp and it looks like its barely been used.
How old is it? And it probably doesn’t have sealed bearing then, huh?
the sealed bearings are better but if you’re a hobbyist you may never have a problem. I don’t think you got ripped off; a new one would have been $100 more, and just think of how much fun you’re going to have paddling out on a board you shaped yourself.
Oh I totally agree, with that. To me it was worth every single penny, but at the point of saving face I didn’t want to admit the price (if indeed I did get shafted, but enough of that talk).
Thanks for your help, can’t wait to actually do some real shaping instead of mind shaping!
