Using more than one tint in the lam?

I have seen quite a few boards recently with what looks like a number of different tints on one side; or tints with large patches of differing colours banded across them. If these were done during the lam (as i have seen on a number of you-tube videos) i would have thought there would be some mixing between the colours where they meet? However most of the finished examples i have seen look relatively clean with straight lines and edges (not perfect which would suggets its not painted on).

Im a bit of a back yard hack hoping to do some colour work on a new board (banded colours or a swirl) so i was hoping someone could give me a rundown on how to go about tinting bands across the board so minimal mixing occurs?

I have seen a few good examples from Rake Surfboards (aus) - I would post some examples but my work computer doesnt allow it.

Any help would be appreciated as i am quite confused!

Lots of helpful tips in this thread. Plus, a link to an instructional video, of sorts.
