If u want to keep a “retro” style board with a progressive, just keep the general outline shape, but change the rails and bottom shape around.
For example-
A traditional twin fish has a flat bottom and double foil fins, generally. I prefer roughly the same outline, but change the bottom where it has concaves and use single foil fins in a way where the board becomes more “modern” and performance oriented. The newer board should makes tighter turning arcs and should feel a bit more responsive and loose. While you loose a bit of planing speed that the traditional fish has, you gained in other aspects.
Glad to have you here! I started like you about 6 years ago but I’m now 59 years old and working on board number 23. You’ll find a lot of info here on Sways about different (sort of newer) methods of constructing a surf board. One method that I’ve gravitated to and I have to say I LOVE THE WAY THE BOARDS COME OUT!!! is the Bert Burger Balsa Composite method.
Do a search on Bert Berger, Sunova Surfboards, Balsa Composites. Another neat way to make boards is the way Paul Jensen makes his boards. They’er hollow wood boards. That style has been around for a long time but the method and materials that he uses is very modern.
So go to the top of the page and on the right hand side you’ll see a window that says ‘SEARCH’. Just type in the words and read away! Any questions, and I know there will be a lot!, just post back here and ask. There are a LOT of VERY knowledgable people on here that would love to see you finish that ModernRetro that’s in your head!
i live in cornwall, england, and i am making a retro style fish using more modern Techniques for my gcse d.t project.
i was asked to make a disussion so that it could give me a wider range of ideas and differnt things i could try.
Does any one have any ideas of how i could introduce a more modren way of making boards into older retro style board?
thanks.
Are you talking about board building methodology, or making a more modern looking “retro” board? The above post addresses the latter possiblity. I would go with a more modern rocker as well.
If you’re interested in the building method that tridrles mentioned, a very useful search term would be compsand. It’s a widely used shorthand word for composite sandwich, and will probably turn up more hits than anything other single term.
Hey goggles, this is the greatest site out there for people who want to make a board: Welcome. How big are you? sizing a board is really based around weight and height and fitness level. For instance, what I ride a lot of these guys would use as handboards when they bodysurf. I weigh 145lbs. and am about 5’10" my fish is 5’0" about 22’ wide, and 2 3/4" thick, and it has too much float for me.
where do you live in cornwall?, i have made a couple of retro fishes, one from carbon cloth and the other from wood veneers vacuumed over eps,are you making the board at school or at home ?
if you search through this site and cannot find the answer you need give me a pm and i will try to help, i live in st austell, pete
