tape off the stringer? Or not?
Never done it before but if it set you would be dragging the tape through it pulling it off…
Or you could tape it off and sand down to that level then pull it off…
Or you could not tape it and sand down to the stringer…
with spackle on PVC stringers, it doesn’t matter too much. you’ll lightly sand it anyway and it leaves a clean looking stringer. With wood, I tape it. With resin and microballoons for sealing I always tape it.
get your spackle to about the consistancey of pancake mix by adding filtered water or DI water. soupy. it is supposed to seep into the foam a bit.
Don’t do it man!
You’ll be ssooorrryyyy! ;D
I remember asking Greg Loehr what the milky white swirl line was on the stringer once and he would hold up his finger and smile.
Don’t mask, just squeegee the excess off. Done properly and cleanly it shouldn’t need sanding, leaving just a slightly milky tinge to the wood.
Of course a good finish depends a lot on how clean you finish shaping, especially the stringer. Sharp little hand planes are good tools.
what about small gaps on each side of the wood stringer? what do I use to fill that in?
The spackle should fill it up, that’s the whole idea of the excersize, filling holes and sealing the surface.
Visualize and understand what Pompano said.
That’s a great lesson and well told.
Classic.

Use the light weight spackle only don’t thin it for the larger gaps. -matt
