I searched the archives but this question, I think, Is too simple to even be addressed in the archives.
When you vacuum bag a compsand surfboard, the whole board is in the bag, right? What I mean is, the bag doesnt just go on top of the surfboard and seal to the rocker table…the whole board is actually inside the bag like a person is inside a sleeping bag, right?
So when the pump sucks the air out, the vacuum pulls the bottom skin to the foam just like it pulls the top, right? It defies gravity, yea?
Just a note - if your doing the board in the bag on a rocker table (the way I do it), weight the board so it holds rocker (I’m doing stringerless). The vac seems to pull the rocker flatter otherwise, and you can see light between the table and board.
If you bag on top of a table you don't use a bag you use a sheet of plastic with double stick glazing tape to seal the plastic to the rocker table surface and thus are compressing the board onto the shape of the rocker table Kind of like how Tom Sullivan showed us. This is old school vacuum bagging..
If you bag just the board then you are just compressing the blank onto itself
If you are want it to take the shape of something then you need to have it hold that shape while the glue dries. Hence the weighing down of the bagged blank onto the the rocker table.
Other wise you stick both the blank and the rocker table into the bag so that the blank is compressed into the rocker table by the bag.
hope that helps
which ever way you do it it still works..
You can watch how it's done with skateboard decks and a hard foam form over at http://www.roarockit.com/i
