vance surfboards updated: 10/2

Hello,

I just today found a surfboard with the label “Vance” on it in a Los Angeles pawn shop. I didn’t have my camera so I’ll have to go back to take pictures, but I was wondering if anyone on the forum knows this shaper.

It is a single fin that appears to be from the 70’s. I’d be curious to know when this board was shaped, and what kind of value it has on the market so I can try and haggle the proprietor.

Thanks in advance,

J

PS. I’ll see if he’ll let me take pictures tomorrow.

Ok, here are the pics.

Ok… So the board is about 6-1 or 6-2. It’s pretty thick and a little on the heavy side, but for a board this age (I think mid 70’s) it’s in good shape. There are about eight or nine dings on the board. Some on the rails, some on the top and bottom decks. The dings are all relatively small and easily fixable (even for someone with my limited talents  The tail is in good shape and there don’t seem to be any soft spots on the board.

All in all, it’s an interesting shape. The proprietor wants $300 for it and I think thats way high for a board with this many dings. Soooo… Anyone have any ideas??? Does the logo look familiar?

Thanks again,

Josef

I wonder if it’s Perry Vance, the builder of the Waldo Autry “Cloud” skateboards ?

Vance had a shop in Sunset Beach about 1970 He was also partners with Ole for a short time and  were known as Ole/Vance. I was a team rider for Katin and the surf shop behind the Katin shop just noth and across the street from their shop,Aussie surboards then Dave Boice.

I remember  boards very similar to this one but their team was riding them with a much larger fin. We were  using  6 "cut down fins for side slipping and 360's and they using these giant 12" deep things. I did not know Vance but spoke to him a few times. Ole was easier and more fun to talk to
