veneer sandwich construction: wood and glassing schedule questions

The shell photo is reminiscient of one of Bert Burger's projects.  I think this one (below) was posted right about the same time as another (more mysterious) photo that only a few people saw before he deleted it.

sways forward for ten yrs    then back it goes ten yrs

   cheers huie

This stuff is  definately NOT all too funny anymore…

I haven’t been following here for  quite some time now  ( thank fuck )…But you can rest assured nothing has changed here…

What the fu^k does …" sways forwards for 10yrs.   then backwards for ten yrs" , mean???

I get the feeling you’re not really laughing, for fun’s sake… You’re laughing at some members  who YOU  think are inferior and  WAY TOO late to the game…

Is that what you’d call a  HAPPY  laugh, or  is it more like an    "I told you how superior I was ages ago, laugh ???

Respond anyway you like to this post… I spend .00001% of my time here now following such crap… I won’t hear or read what you say in rebuttal, but you can rest assured I know how you feel … Chew on that baby…

Resoltech and sicomin make those products.
But you can also add foaming adgent and flexibilizer to standard resin.

Go fly a kite and tie your troubles to the tail

They’ll be blown away by a merry gale,

Go fly a kite and toss your worries to the wind

And they won’t come back, they’ll be too chagrined.

Go on make friends with the sky

Have a talk with the sun

It’s the bright way to live, if you’ll pardon the pun

Go fly a kite and you’ll imagine you’re a king

Cause you’ve got your world on a piece of string

Hey huie, any ideas to go forward for another ten years again? I’m looking forward to.

Revisiting the old often opens paths for the new, creating unique hybrids.  Hail Atlantis

I find Mr. Quanta’s technology intriguing – many potential variations on a theme.

If you are willing to say, what weight of Hessian Burlap cloth are you using Mr. Quanta?  oz/yard?

Has anybody tried Baltic Birch as a veneer for surfboards?

Nothing wrong with YOUR vision ES. That’s the inside …don’t it look wild? The new age release agents make it posable .

Send me your favorate board. Let me clone it for you.

I just bought the lightest available at Bunnings [OZs Home Depo] I’m pretty sure I could source a lighter grade but it weighs around  twice as much as 4oz f/g cloth and  it’s  about half the cost which is a pittance anyway.

Cheers.

Thanks Quanta.

I may do some experimenting with Hessian Burlap (jute) and Linen (flax).

I could not find weights for Burlap but I did for Linen.  This is what I could dig up online here in the States:

Burlap (several colors), $2.99 - $3.99/yd:

Linen (several colors) $5.60 - $9.60 yd (3.5-8.0 oz):

to all “thick veneer builders”: how do make your rails?

I made solid balsa rails, but they need a glassing.

what are the possibilities to make rails that don’t need any glassing?

Small slices? Pressing the veneer in a mould?

Solid rails (e.g. Maple) would be too heavy and stiff I think?

check out the boards of http://www.glass-tiger.com/index.php.

He uses all the things you mentioned: birch ply, solid wood rails, no glass.

There’s many ways to do it AniHL…the reason few do it is viability…if someones prepared to pay the labour costs , they will get their moneys worth , and get something that’s unique. The 3 main criteria for any production board is weight requirement , durability and price. A composite board , with solid balsa handshaped rails , and a nice showroom finish (maybe) is very good combination and will perform to any requirements , without compromise. There is a trend these days to pursue “cheap and easy” which IMO is not a good thing. Anyone who aims for quality , should expect to be paid adequately to do so…too many people these days are trying to compete with China on price…its a race to the bottom. Those who build and ride their own , are sitting in a comfortable position , and making some nice boards.

G’day AndlHlL, I started out with making balsa veneer boards and you’re right. Balsa needs a fibreglassing. Balsa is historic and ‘romantic’ but it’s hopeless in water. If you ding your Balsa board down to the timber the shit turns black. While it’s light and eazy to work with, it’s just plain  wrong to use it for surfboards unless you’ve got eight layers of glass shrouding it. Oh and the weight of it all … the pain the pain.

I’ve gone over to Cedar because it absolutely loves salt water [like teak] If you go to google, searching under marine timbers, you’ll find all the other goodies as well… Like Maple.

As to the rail question. I’ve tried everything … even steam but the best way is by, as you said, “Small Slices”

Here’s a hint how to compile those slices … from a board that is some 15 years old and never ridden.

Just one more pic.

hey quanta, thanks for the hints!!

one more question:

Maybe I can get a 1.5mm (1/16) maple veneer. I think that a 6oz glass layer between foam an wood would be enough?

but what about a stringer? the board will be 9’6 and I’ve prepared a 3/8’’ inch poplar plywood stringer and I’m afraid that the board will become too stiff…

If you’re doing a 9/6 I guess weight don’t matter much. Go the stringer … go the 6 but I would go the four and only  under the deck. As to stiffness? Don’t wood flex?

Cheers.

Thank you very much!!!
