Ventura Artificial Reef

After the following the future of surboards thread I decided to look at artificial reefs. What is being done and where they are. Low and behold thier is one being considered in Ventura county. Anyone have any info on the subject. When will it be constructed or will it even happen?

Check out www.StanleysReef.org There’s alot of good info in there.

The lyall bay reef in Wellington, New Zealand has passed all it’s planning and approval hurdles and just needs funding. CHeck:

Anyone know if there will be one built in the San Diego area?

There has been on/off talk about putting in a submerged, dual-purpose reef off Encinitas. Unfortunately the primary purpose is sand retention, with a surfing reef playing second fiddle. Doubly unfortunate in that the proposed area is already a decent break and there is no guarantee that the proposed stucture will improve the situation, or even maintain the status quo. A project that makes more sense from both the standpoint of sand retention and a “proof of concept” project for a surf reef would seem to be in the area between restaurant row in Cardiff and Seaside reef, where sand retention is near nill and coastal erosion has long been a problem (now protected by rip-rap to protect Hwy 101)–and when waves are present, they tend to be walls. This area would make even more sense if Hwy 101 is moved farther inland (as has been proposed to enhance the exchange of water between the lagoon and the ocean) since then the present Hwy 101 roadway could serve as parking.

A description of an apparently successful artifical surf reef in Australia can be found in the report: “Performance Monitoring of the Cable Station Artifical Surfing Reef” by Stacey Bancroft (thesis). Univ. of Western Australia, Dept. of Enviro. Engr., Oct. 1999. 148p.

I sure hope they do a better job than the waste of 1 million dollars they did here in perth.

[Build it in an area where an island and surrounding reefs don’t stop the swell getting in, for starters !]

surfing teaches us to be oppertunists

the planning stages for man made constructs have history

the army corps of engineers …,whoopie?!

the slump of the geology at La Conchita…

if you remember… a million cubic yards of material ?more?

slurry this stuff, like my Eco disaster ancestors in the late gold rush,

and spew it into the beach system and there you go

artifice to a reef ?

A plan to spend taxes on a study so non surfers

non compus-meantis legislators

can decide/ Ha Ha Ha

it will never happen and it will be a marginal success

sand over the rip rap hmmm

a marginal success for cheap or free

the material is to be hauled

you can bet your lunch-money

win and buy two lunches…

the material belongs to the shoreline

and the powers that be are likely to steal it for personal gain

artifice to the agrandizement of a political cronie?

is that where the sand is going? or…

do we get a reefing sand bar that the south swell shoves back and forth to fill in rincon so it peels like Liddle say’s it use-to?

or down to stanleys in the summer

to agrivate the highway patrol metermaids

LETS HEAR IT FOR LEGISLATIVE ENGAGEMENT

let the sand run free

dredge the dams and let the sand go

LET THE SAND GO

free huey newton?

FREE THE SAND>>>FREE THE SAND>>>FREE THE SAND!!!

…ambrose…obtuse cocktail anyone?

Hmmmm. Well I am no means an advocate for messing with mother nature. In the course of hundreds of years humans have learned to destroy Her nature and we have paid the concequences. Destroying coastline to put a freeway on shore only to be swallowed up by ocean or cliff. I do have the devil inside of me wanting ever better surf in my backyard.

Are humans destined to relive the past?

Continue to shape the world to meet thier needs?

Is all already lost?

It is the endless battle.

We cannot change the masses.

Where is my frappo crappo chino?

People will still surf and continue to populate the waves. I am just looking for that perfect right.

Is there really any difference between the synthetic boards we create and creating a synthetic reef?

If so wouldn’t shouldn’t we who claim to want to preserve the ocean toss out…er, I mean recycle our boards and all become body surfers? I really don’t see that creating a synthetic board has done any damage. Can’t help but wonder if an artificial reef would be just as harmless.

Take it a step further. If they really wouldn’t be harmful, why shouldn’t we as surfers noot only be all for it but infiltrating the coastal commisions and legislature with our own special interest group and designing our reefs just like we do our boards. Heck, why can’t there be proffessional reef designers like golf course designers? I hereby claim to be the first professional reef designer. AquaReefs inc. For 500K you get the basic starter reef. They are produced in China. We stop creating them here in the US. They are designed by all the legendary reef designers; Chuck, Bob, Fred, Dick, Paul , Harry. You name 'em we got a genuine artificial reef designed by 'em.

Ever notice how the body mass of a dolphin causes the wave to feather a little right above him? How about we put those good-for-nothing dolphins to work! A pod assigned to every surfer that paddles out. Assume the position… Personal reef incorporated for the cost of a bucket of mackeral. More jobs for trainers and the bait boats! The glowing pride of ownership in your own personal reef pod. And the corporate boys could cover 'em with tatoo logos and those glowing light things for some after dark go-outs. That’s the kind of circus I’m talking about.

I still think there needs to be some man-made relief/reef in the high population knots.

Just put the Newport groins a little more offshore and submerge 'em and let the sand/shit flow. You’ll be eating some tasty “brownies” as you head-dip down the line…

Are there better profit margins in a bucket of mackeral than in Chinese labor?

Ya takes your chances…

Warning:

DO NOT LOOK at this picture if your reality doen’t include dolphin safe tuna, or you feel a kin to fellow mammals that surf, or if you can’t stand the sight of blood, etc.

If you’re going to create an artificial reef for surfing, might as well add on a big contraption that blocks incoming swell and instead pumps out perfect 20sec period waves aimed right at the a-frame artificial reef. They could alternate the height daily from 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, etc. swells.

Me? I kind of like the search.

Slim,

They already have the big blocking contraption perfected.

“Killer” Dana, may she rest in peace…

yep the yachtie kids will have the admission fees in their allowance without cutting into the beamer fuel bill…and running the surf all night while the boats arent smugglling would be great use of pricy oceanfront real estate… ambrose, brokering equity

well, interesting enuf, this reef is going to replace a wave that was created by artificial structures in first place, ie a pier, (or series of them), which have been removed, yaking with it a great little wave.in addition the sand flow has increased(or it seems to have since then) down the way doing more harm than good to a couple of spots.hopefully this reef will reclaim some of that sand and the wave…
