Reading the thread on the Hynson stretch got me to thinking: it would be great if there was a site out there that compiled information/images of vintage/innovative surfboards - all eras and types. Ideally, it would grow over time with contributions from any and all sources: owners, the Stecyk Laguna museum show, auctions, old magazines’ scanned photos, whatever. Anybody know of such a thing?
http://www.surfresearch.com.au/
moss, this is an Australian site with mainly Ausrtalian content, but it’s worth a look.platty.
Andy Andeson has compiled an extensive site on as many different mfgs. that existed in pre history. There are many I have never heard of
I have seen this collection!!! I was amazed, of the boards he has, I did the foam Channin gun, the balsa Channin gun, the Surfboards Hawaii Balsa noserider and the Weber figure 8
an honest attempt to REPRODUCE vintage turning points in surfing shapes…on that level a rousing success, otherwise each rendition has an apparent near to original quality, like listening to phil leasch sing maggies farm or another dylan song …the melody whocares but tme meter is all off and therefore not the real thing…yes a few are closer but …these reproductions are not accurate therefore not the stuff…old beat up boards well patched give the feel of that takeyama rail that even DR Donald doesnt do anymore… the Metz guy has the stuff Hoffman has thestuff that was the real period renderings…the rail that greg tucker tucked at honolua was not inches away from glued on astro turf puhleeeze…professor phillips kudos but each and every one you have shaped is, is a great phillips …I wonder if Iggy could do an accurate performer…or not? ambrose…I am thinking of painting Nude desecending a staircase but all in red and green and a mona lisa but with a Lacoste shirt on …for my new exibit at the mini louve in Kapaa,in the low spot nex to burga king
Ah, Ambrose, I was thinks the parking lot of Kuhio Motors would be a better place for an exhibit, perhaps with Lippy Espinda on the mike as emcee
Mano,I had been tink right away Yes wid da Beeg statu ov Lippy …With dizzy Gilespie and dewey Weber watching down ova us with Lippy’s adoring smile vicariously enjoying the good time we are having…lippy Lives in the hearts of late fifty year olds who watched T.V. waiting to go to the beach with their moms…ambrose…Toshiro Mifune is there too
that’s the best post ever on swaylock’s. period. have continued fun Ambrose. Steiny
Ambrose--------- Harold Iggy can no doubt still shape an accurate performer. The reality is that there are not many guys left that can fastforward to totally modern shapes and then rewind to the’60’s. There will come a time when we’ll all be seriosly reminescing about these guys and wishing they were around to shape us something . The closet thing will no doubt be their sons(Stoner,Yater etc.) and a myriad of guys who are now turning out retros Like Gene Cooper and Tyler. Beyond that there are the people of Swaylocks’, who manage to keep old good designs alive and forge ahead with the newest innovations. McDing
Iggy is THE MAN…rewind? NO !! validate the conlusions and draw the lines and tune the rails to enhance the drift/glide duality present in the period shape trend quest. the making of a look alike is only a start like sailors growing a regulation mustache to go to the filmore on acid is a start but smacking of in - genuineness .kudos to those who have protected the curves to refrence to guage the shapes by touch, the higher sense,Retros? an interresting point of departure but a reniesance of shaping will come only from the heart and soul of the creative spirit not from a ditto machine recognition.Col.benson ‘s naration in his old movie said somthing about becky doing a phil edwards move and I was hard pressed to see any remote relationship between her little arch in the shore break to what I was inoctrinated to expect of Master surfer Phil, this casual referencing only erodes the crisp definitive communication of shape understanding like whats a fish ? a rocket or a steevie?or what the cluck is that 5’2’’ 18’'tripple wing swallowed tale of three countries? Maybe A stevie should be called a point loma fish and the rockets should be called a Huntigton fish and the others deliniated tactfully with terms fitting their realms of development to adapt to their respective environs…S.A.rivermouth is not Newbreak or is it tunnels or tongs…terms count …the problem is disinformation in the hands of honest researchers being fed with inacurate information drawing conclusions and restructuring the history skewed to the edge of hopeless distortion…pardon me but My thursday nights laying on the floor watching Victory at Sea listening to my dad correct the narator’s mistakes identifing Heavy Cruisers as Destroyers . The New Orleans is not the Missouri ,scholars studing these chronicles are writing according to availiable information and their readers conclusions are based on these writings getting it right is critical The book has great pictures Why can’t marge calhoun’s daughter get her name spelled right … ambrose … yes ambrose is my first name…Tilton shaped the thin rail Yater spoons… right? or were they bradbury or Iker A rennie is a rennie is a rennie and a copy is a copy is a copy
Over the years you have smoked way too much Pakalolo! With the clarity of an uncluttered and unfettered mind (that has done some soaring of its own over the years); I cannot get past your ramlbings. A little acid-head dribble used to be kinda fun. But even with all my former Hendrix-like experiences I still am unable to stay up with you. McDing
Check out Lance Carsons web site. www.lancecarson.com. He has not changed his boards. You can still get a Hap Jacobs Lance Carson Model, from Lance Carson. Same rocker, same timpelet. I know because he still has the first board that Hap shaped for him and he used it as his model. He has been setting in the back ground because most of the people that surf long boards can not surf one of his boards like they should be surfed. Most of the today longboard surfers want to turn a board like a skateboard. Lean that way and the board will go that way, and they call that a turn, or better yet a cut back. Yes Gene Cooper is doing a great job, as is Tyler, but Lance has never lost the stoke, he was off his line for a while but never far. Most of us have gotten off line a little. If you want a true classic check out his boards. Yes I rep him but I also surf his boards and love the way they ride. Don’t bad mouth Ambrose eather. He knows what he is doing some of us just have not caught up with how he says it. If you have ever met him you would know he is the real thing. He just has a different way of saying it.
yea, i had an LC3 for a season…the sidebites boxes were leaking and i foolishly traded it in on a robert august(victim of marketing) what an idiot! even though i love my own longboards i’ll always miss my lance carson board.
Dis cah so fine, I evens sell dis one to one haole
whats in a name,eh?
Bagman ----------- I have met him, as I lived on Kauai quite a few years back. And I’m not bad mouthin’ him, I’m just stating a simple fact; ‘shrooms,pakalolo,Acid-drop, aside I cannot stay up with him. Fact is the few times I talked to the guy I found him Highly interesting. I’m just thinkin’ the only way I’m gonna ever “get it”, is go back to those little squares with the picture or Mr Natural on ‘em and start over. And that my friend, scares the livin’ s#!t outta me. Of course all of this is said in good fun and I certaintly do enjoy his posts when I can get through them, point or no point. No offense intended. McDing
over the years since 1982 my passion and clarity have been focused on other than belittling remarks when honestly trying to understand things greater than my limited perspective jimmy hendrix died of swallowing his own puke…re read the piece and study the names like Marge Calhoun,Lippy Espinda, watch victory at sea,Listen to the authoritative narator,The fact that the english are slow was why jokes told on saturday were outlawed in england,I would think that a decendant son of the emerald Isle would be able to grasp a train of thought no mater how obtuse or perhaps you were not born a Mc Ding but were adopted by the fine family…perhaps the zen circlings appear as ramblings because of a linear mind set…bless you may you wake up tomorrow dyslexic to help you through this peeriod of confusion…ambrose…I will say a small prayer for you to understand…forget mr natural try frank herbert ,william Gibson.James Joyce,Robert Crumb is not a factor and I thought like this when I was bored as a child with my linear education the windows in my life were clear mr natural scares you for one reason he was not your friend … I am
Hey well…I haven’t been around for awhile but Swaylocks is still looking good to me.I think that when I first started reading Ambrose’s Posts I got the wrong idea.I thought he was some youngster reading thesarius and I actually shot my mouth off to Mr. A about that same subject.Well I eat humble pie because after I figured out where he was coming from I changed my views.Ambrose is classic,he knows what he is talking about…you gotta read between the lines. It’s almost like a form of "beat poetry"to me.All of you Guys are OK in my book.I cracked up when Ambrose mentioned “Lippy Espinda”.Jim Phillips caught that one right away. How many of you Guys know who Lippy was (or is)???LOL R.B.
