I am a high school art teacher in Maryland and was approached by a senior for some help. She needed a surfboard to be painted for an event our local school system does for graduating seniors. I was hesitant to help being so busy with the end of the school year but said yes. The next day when the board was delievered I was suprised to see it had some age. Being one to enjoy things from the past I started to do some research and happend upon this forum. I would like to find out anything about the board to educate the owner and also would like to see it preserved. The board logo reads Hansen Cardiff and is 8.5' tall 22" wide. I have not been able to locate any numbers or letters that the shaper may have used to mark the board. It seems to have a couple dings that were repaired but do not see any cracks or major dents. Not having experience in surfboards I would say it is in decent to good shape. Unfortunately I had to paint some text and images on the underside (paint is removable and should not harm the board). Can anyone tell me anything about the board (date, possible worth)? It has been a joy to research and educate my students on what I call a piece of history.
The board appears to have been shortened from the original length. (nose area) The glass leash loop obscures the board number, but the overall appearance says 1965 to me. You have a large reverse T-Band stringer, glass tailblock with balsa backing, and a brown core white glass on fin. All consistant with 1965 era construction methods. The glass leash loop is a later addition by one of its owners.
As Bill said - I would guess mid 60’s - (unlike Bill, I don’t have the great design reasons) - but according to http://stokednboard.surfingheritage.org/pdf/Hansen_USA_Ca.pdf (see figure 26) the logo on the board was used from 1962 - 1967. (It was also used on some more retro-boards from 97-05 but I dont think the board is from those years).
Much appreciated. I just talked to a guy who's head of the lifeguards out here in Ocean City, MD and he was telling me it looks like the nose had been reshaped and the tail end reworked, possibility of it once being water logged. I'm assuming this all effects the value. what do you think $100. Thanks for your reply
