here's a few shots I took just now [ saturday arvo] , just to give you an idea of its dimensions , and some templates that nearly fit inside it .

The only thought I had is ...

it's [from memory] 15 layers of volan , on the 'inside' edge of the panel / fins . So ,  it may actually suit [single-foiled] keels , or twinnys , or a thruster set [with clear back fin?] , better ?

It 'would'  be interesting to see if any volan greenish colour remained [on one side only , though ?!] of a single fin , but I'm thinking it would get ground off , in the double foiling of a single fin .

If I was thinking of making it for a 'single fin panel' , when I layed it up , then I would have put the 15 layers of volan in the MIDDLE of the layup , if that makes sense .

Anyway , if I'm able to get to the markets tomorrow , I'll bring the panel with me , along with the swaylocks 'orange stub' board , and some swaylocks logo'd side fins

.... If not , hopefully we can catch up at my place , before I leave ?  [you may end up scoring some other stuff , too, I think...]

It was GREAT meeting you last week , THANKS for coming up and introducing yourself !

 cheers mate !

  ben

hi again , 'Noodle' !

The panels were  on    this     thread , originally , a while ago , now ...

  cheers mate !

Hey Ben

PM sent, hopefully try to catch up this week if you are about.

all the best mate

thanks very much !

...yep , I will be at home ALL week , when not taking water shots [if offshore] , skate shots [if people  show up?] , and / or buying food.

the REST of the time , I will be throwing out bucketloads of accumulated stuff , to get ready for going ....

  well ,  Marcus ,

I hope we can catch up soon ?

if you have time , then you can check out my boards , fins , mags , dvds , videos , surf books , [etc etc etc ]

  cheers mate !

    ben

How many layers in total?

I’m laying up a full volan fin panel at the moment, 32 layers of 8oz. Hoping its thick enough.

yep , that's exactly what MINE was , Matt !

however , mine was ....

15 layers of volan ,

and

17 layers of 6oz cloth [non-volan]

It seemed just the right thickness , for my fin boxes ....   are you making YOURS, to fit a finbox ??

    cheers mate !

    ben

hi again , Matt !

I just had the thought ....

'if ' you are making single fins , for a finbox  [ yes ? ] ....

maybe you could  just lay up the middle 16 layers with volan , and 8 layers of 6oz [plain] , either side ??

  That way ,

1]  when you [double] foil the panel , you will still have the nice volan colour left , hopefully ?

 and ...

2]  you can make TWO panels worth of single fins , from your 32 or so layers of volan ...

  how large is each piece ? [? 8" x 10" ... or larger , hopefully ?]

okay , mate ...I hope this helps you ?

  cheers !

  ben

from my 2nd volan panel [these will be single-foiled 'hockey stick side fins / twinnys ] ....

Yeah its for a finbox.

I have a PG whale fin that I believe is all volan, seems to have a softer flex.

Panel is ~ 9" x 12" , should get one big fin and a couple of sets of single tabbed sidebites out of it.

I only made it all volan as I had some left from a recent board.

I’ll try and post some pictures once panel is complete…if I can ever figure out how again.

cheers Matt ,  I look forward to seeing it !

if you can't figure how to post shots here , if you are on facebook , post them there and I can post them here , for you , if you like ??

or I can do it via email , if you want to 'p.m.' me , here ?

   cheers mate !

  ben

[do TWO panels though , i reckon ...volan is not CHEAP , after all !]
