Volan Laminations

I’m exploring a source for Volan finished cloth to use on a 9’6" project. Fiberglass Supply carries several types of this heavier cloth. Anyone care to share the pitfalls of doing a first lamination with this heavy weave cloth. Some questions: Which is preferred plain weave or flat weave type cloth? Is the same resin/cloth ratio or squeegee technique used? Will a single hotcoat fill the heavier weave? Any additional problems with tints or opaques? First one will be a clear cutlap but there is a heavyweight opaque glassjob in my future, there is just something magic about that rich color and polished finish.

my second lamination was with volan and i didnt think it was much harder. i think you need more resin to soak the cloth, and its a little tougher to work with, but not bad. i thiiink the flat weave would be better. and tints and opaques look great with volan. i did my first one with seafoam bottom and rails and clear top and it looks great. ive used volan and will continue to use it on all of my future projects. it just has a great look to it.>>> I’m exploring a source for Volan finished cloth to use on a 9’6" > project. Tom: All of my boards are glassed in volan because of it’s ability to absorb impacts and dent rather than crack open like an egg like sylene(?)glass.Go with the flat weave then roll and squeegee as much of the resin out as you can-gives a strong bond and more durable finish and weight is a little less.Even if volan wasn’t “all that” I would still use it ccause it does have a bitchin’ look to it.Good luck!

What is the best weight volan cloth to use? Does it require a deck patch? I’m thinking about doing a 7"6" egg in volan. Any suggestions?

i think it just depends on how heavy you want it. personally, i would probably go with 7.5 or 8oz volan. or if they make it, 6oz would be good too. i’d put 2 layers on top and one on the bottom.>>> What is the best weight volan cloth to use? Hi I want just know if volan in difficult to wet (much time to absorb) or is easily like sylane. never work with it just look in Australia some people working and they look very natural… I want start now thanks

i didnt think it was much more difficult to work with. maybe it takes a little longer to wet just because the cloth is heavier. overall, it is not too much different at all.>>> Hi I want just know if volan in difficult to wet (much time to absorb) or > is easily like sylane. never work with it just look in Australia some > people working and they look very natural… I want start now thanks

Same. Same same same. Have a few Margaritas and go for it.
