making a 10’ allaround cruiser. Not retro, not modern hi performance, somewhere in between. I am trying to to decide whether to use Volan or S glass. I will be doing a light blue transparent tint. My main concern is strength. Will a 10oz Volan glass job be stronger than a 6oz bottom/double6oz top? I am not to concerned about wieght, so that isn’t an issue. Or maybe I could do a 10oz Volan bottom and the 2 layers of 6oz for the top. Anyone ever combine the two diffrent glass types? Any thoughts and input is greatly appreciated. Thanks Drew
I remember glassing a 9’6" with s-glass for “strength”, double 6 oz. on top and bottom. It buckled on day one in four foot surf. I’ve been riding a 9’2" since '97 that I glassed with a single 6 oz. Volan bottom and double 6oz. Volan deck. Other than a couple of small dents it looks new. IMHO, Volan cloth is less refined, or refined differently perhaps, and has more of a tendency to dent. It’s less brittle than some of the other cloths, s-cloth included.
