Hey Gang, I inherited a OLD blank with a W.A.V.E. Set Fin Box already set into place. Not an I deal situation, but the shaper was an great friend untill his death. Plus, it is a 6’4" egg shape with winger setup like the recently posted Robert August shape, but with a nice wide round tail. Looks like a neat board to finish up. My question is where can I get a fin for this board. I had one that was a nice long rake job wich was nice untill it snaped. I’ve got another that looks like a little 6" shark fin. But hopefully I can find an 8 or 9" long rake. Anybody know a source? Please don’t tell me I have to start building a mold! Thank’s, Colin P.S. Please send a swell to the North East. Thanks again.
I did a search for W.A.V.E. fins and came up with quite a few sites. Without seeing the box they go in I don’t know if this is what you are looking for. (I noticed quite a few windsurfing fins in the search). Click the link below and type in W.A.V.E. fins. This is a great search engine and it MIGHT have what you are looking for. http://www.google.com/

Start building a mold! You are an evil man… Kidding!! I checked up in Google, Mike D., but they all seemed like fins that would fit the standard fin box. This was a company that Tom Morey started called “W.A.V.E. Set” They even made an aluminium hollow surfboard. The fin box is an inch or so wide, close to a foot long and an inch and a half deep. It has screw holes at either end to fix the fin to the board. Now if I’m going to have to build a mold… which I did as a teen to get a W.A.V.E. Set board in the water. How do I build a base that fat? I chopped fabric and poured resin and it ended up cracking all over the place… Can I get urethane resin and pour it into a fin mold? I was really hoping somebody had one in a box in their garage or something…
I’ve heard of using clear silicon calking to hold a fin in a box that it does not fit. I havn’t done this but may need to on a friends Hansen which we cannot find a fin for (that is for less than $150!). If you want to try this… Here’s how it was explained to me… First, be sure that your fin sits flush, or lower, than the box (cant have the base sticking out) A bead of the silicon is put down in the bottom of the box. Then you place your fin down into the box and position it as you want it and tape it so that it is vertical. Fill in around the fin with the silicon and while it is still wet clean up any excess (you can tape-off the box to help this process if you’d like). Let it sit overnight and you should have a useable board in the AM. Drawbacks are that you cannot move the fin around without having to tear out the silicon and starting over. Good part is that it holds the fin in strongly and yet silicon is always somewhat pliable so you can still pop the fin out and not hurt the board or the box. On classic boards changing the box can hurt the value. And if you ever find the right fin for it, all is intact. Again I havn’t done this but when I heard of the method it sounded like a workable idea. Good luck>>> You are an evil man… Kidding!! Colin-I do believe that the fella that runs Fiberglass Fin Co. in Wilmington CA makes reproduction waveset fins, not too pricey either-sorry I don’t have the phone # but it is in the 310 area code. Also check with Eric at Chubbysurf.com for a used one.Juan at oneworldsurf.com also is said to make ‘em but I have had no luck in getting a responce to my email from him. Also check with Joseph Alphabet Email:alphasurf@aol.com-he seems to find all sorts of stuff or perhaps can direct you to someone who can help.Chris Jepson at sometime finds stuff like this too and is a great guy.Good luck!!!Another choice might be to fill the box with a shim, carefully glass over the box and glass a fin on-keeping in mind that you might want to grind it off one day.If Gene is reading this maybe he can give a little insight. Steiny.
Make that for Chris Jepson
Thanks for some Info gang! I’ll check it out tomorrow. Just about outta work for today. I’m not up to the challange of 50+ layers of fabric for this project. That’s why the pros are the pros! Give me a little more time for that one. I promise the spirit of Swaylocks is not lost on me. This board will be my first full glassing project. I want to do a really good job and I am reading everything I can. Thanks to EVRYBODY on Swaylocks! Colin

Thanks again. Colin, As a few others have suggested, you might want to contact Juan Rodriguez at One World (941) 925-0007. He does make replacement fins for the W.A.V.E. Set Fin Box. In fact, I believe he stocks all of the shapes that were available for this system. Good luck, Barry

Tooling silicon would be the best, if you have access. Pricey. I’ve set entire boxes back inside beaded(polystyrene) racing paddle boards with this kind of silicon. Works great. Fiberglass Fin co. # 310 530 1383 ask for Larry. Tell him Steve Brom says hello.
Thanks MM. Nice to get props once in a while. EJ>>> Colin, this is a pretty good call. Tooling silicon would be the best, if > you have access. Pricey. I just talked to Larry from Fiberglass Fin Co. Wealth of info! He gave me an approximate date of my blank and a brief chronology of fin box evolution. I got all the color options and a price. The price is fair at $110, concidering its an out of production special. So I have to glass my blank and save my pennies for a fin. Clear blue or smoke? What do you think? I’m leaning towards smoke. Colin

Colin: give Blinky a call at Ventura Surf shop(805)643-1062.He or possibly Stan Fujii may have some old w.a.v.e. set fins in a corner somwhere. Also, you might want to call Thane Pope at Pope Bisect (tell him Matt sent you)-he or his dad might have some fins and boxes as well.Good luck!

Thanks again. Colin, You might try talking to the guys at “True Ames Fins” in Goleta, California. They have a number of fin styles for everything from sailboards to Greenough / Paul Gross flex style fins from the 60’s-70’s. Check 'em out. Adios
