I’m landlocked in central Washington and grew up with a wakeboarding background. Since I’ve been shaping surfboards, I’ve built a couple wakesurfers for behind the boat. I’d be curious to know if other shaper/builders have done any as well. What works? What doesn’t? Below is my latest.
It’s a 4’8" x 21" x 2". It has a single concave from the front foot to about 18" from the tail. From there it goes into a vee. The stringer line is super flat to maintain speed behind a gutless boat wake. The concave and the vee provide a little rocker on the rail line to help it turn. It’s got three fin boxes, but is designed around being a twin. The center box would allow you to ride it as a single fin. It’s got one layer of 4 oz. S glass on the bottom and two layers of 4 oz. S glass on the top. The finished product also has traction pads for both feet, since wax and boat upholstery don’t do well together. I think my next one will be maybe 1-1/2" or 1-3/4" thick with heavier glass. I rode it behind the boat today, and it was fun. I’ll post the video once it’s finally uploaded to YouTube.
Here is a shot of it before it glassed it.
Another shot of the board nearing the end of shaping.
Ive made something similar with foot straps. I kept the outline a lot less curvy and pretty close to flat rocker to keep it from feeling like it was bogging out behind the boat. Rails were alot thinner too. Your board reminds me of a maui skimmer with thicker rails
nice looking board there. what kind of foam are you using? I am building surfboard for river waves which are much more gutless than a boat wave. as of now i have found that a double cut diamond tail has been working the vest. It is loose but you dont loose the drive or push in the tail, that helps you stay in the wave. Also with these low tail rocker boards quad fins seem to produce the most drive thru turns the. the twins are real loose side to side but they dont produce much speed in the turns. river and wake surfing are very similar. your rocker and shape look perfect if your board is feeling doggy try it with with a thruster fin set up. if it feels sticky eitger slap a quad set in or build the next board as a quad. i have tge fin placement down for the rivers but your going to have a little more speed and differwnt angles on the wave so you might have to play with the set up. i am runni.g future fin boxes and i place the center an inch in on front fins then 1 1/8" in for trailers 3/16" toe in front. 1/4" for trailers. i could possible get you fin corridnates if you are using a different fin setup
It’s a polyurethane US Blank glassed with epoxy. Here are a couple videos of it being surfed.
This first one is of me on the board’s first ride. We didn’t have the boat wake dialed in very well, so it was small. We usually produce a wave twice this size out of my brother-in-law’s boat. We were in a hurry to test it before giving it to my buddy.
