Walk the Walk.............

…Okay,Shapers, and Glassers ,here’s a subject not touched or rarely discussed… …We all talk about walking the board… …What about walking the board while buildin’it.I was shaping last night til 0400,and remembered a conversation with Rick McHale on"THE WALK". …Does it help with you surfing walk? …well?Herb

Herb: My take on it. You shape it, you glass it and then sand it (almost like shaping it again!). After all is said and done you already know a lot about how that stick will ride. At the very least you have a good idea of it’s limitations and fine points. Yeah, you built it and for sure you’re going to have some idea of how to ride it. It’s all pure fun from start to finish. There are always some surprises! Fins are first up on the the list of possibilities for fine tuning. The whole process of making your own equipment just makes for a much richer surfing experience. Homemade is 'mo betta…for most everthing. man, if its a dance I got two left feet, but one day I’m going to mambo!

man, if its a dance I got two left feet, but one day I’m going to mambo! Yo J.R. thats funny…how about “The Twist” for the first shape,“Mashed Potatoes” for first glass job …"Funky Chicken"for first day in the lineup. If you are a youngster you probably won’t get this but the Geezers will.“The Swim” was the worst of all…Check out the old 60’s beach movies with Frankie Avalon and crew for a good yuck.

Cleanlines- remember that series of beach movies with VonZipper and his crew. One of them had Little Richard I believe in the music scene. yowza. Yea…Eric Vonzipper the ultimate Holywood “Hodad”…lost credibility amongst the bros. by riding a friggin’ Honda wimp bike.Good “Boogalu” dances with the Beach Bunnies though.Actually these stupid movies had a large part in the explosion of surfing in the 1960’s…guys like Hobie,Greg Noll,Dewey Weber etc. were covered up with orders as a result of these films. This might be fodder for a whole new string…but I think that the young guys would be be lost.

Yeh, but the guy who made out the best on the Hollywood “surf” movies was Phil of Downey, more movie surfboards than were ever sold for props than for surfing.

Yeh, but the guy who made out the best on the Hollywood “surf” > movies was Phil of Downey, more movie surfboards than were ever sold for > props than for surfing. Yo Jim I can remember that you were the first Haole surfer I ever met when I was a kid in Hawaii…You had peroxided hair, and a cool madras shirt.I still think that you and I were some of the first guys to put Roller Derby wheels on skateboards…your dad drove us to the skate rink and we bought used wheels and bolted em on…every day after school we hit “slopes” at Hickam Elementary School or the ramp at the meat packing place.

Yeh, but the guy who made out the best on the Hollywood “surf” > movies was Phil of Downey, more movie surfboards than were ever sold for > props than for surfing. about 12 years ago a friend scored a mint conditioned Phil at a garage sale for something like $50.00.Pretty clean shape and that thing surfed pretty damn good too!(considering it was a pop-out for movie sets)

Yeh, but the guy who made out the best on the Hollywood “surf” > movies was Phil of Downey, more movie surfboards than were ever sold for > props than for surfing. That was Phil Sauers, he went to school with my older brother. He turned me on to surfing when I was 5 years old, he would visit us while camping at Doheny in the early 50’s. The first film he was involved with was " Muscle Beach Party", he had the contract to supply the boards for the movie. He didn’t have enough boards and he asked to borrow a board he gave me. I get a kick out of seeing my old board when I watch that movie. The board maker in “Ride the Wild Surf” is supposed to be Phil, but that guy was a big guy and Phil was about 5’6" and weighed about 135lbs.

about 12 years ago a friend scored a mint conditioned Phil at a garage > sale for something like $50.00.Pretty clean shape and that thing surfed > pretty damn good too!(considering it was a pop-out for movie sets) Contrary to thought Phil Surfboards were not pop-outs, They were shaped and glassed at the Foss Foam factory.I had a Phil that Kit Horn shaped for me after he returned from a trip to Austrailia in 1964.

don’t know about little richard, but one for sure had “little Stevie > Wonder” The sixties surfing explosion spurned a vast industry that was directly related to these “Beach Movies”.Skateboarding took off all over the country…“Hang Ten” surfwear was selling in mens shops in Kansas, the Beach Boys made millions on surf tunes and General motors sold a ton of Chevy Malibus with a surf related ad campaign. The Endless Summer film sold out all over the country and all of a sudden surfing was the big deal. Those were really fun times…the Surf Magazines featured cool ads from board builders.I just got a copy of a surf magazine yesterday and all of the ads were about clothes, shoes, sunglasses etc.I guess the Board guys can’t afford to advertize in these corporate publications any more.Do any of you guys remember the old “thumbs up…thumbs down” hand signal we used to flash at each other in our cars when going down the highway?Do that today and you might get shot in a road rage incident or at least get the finger.Jeeze I’m starting sound like my old man with his war stories.

I was working for Dick Metz at the Hobie shop on Kapiolani in Honolulu, when the brought in the boards that had been used in “Ride the Wild Surf”. I had to repair the anchors in the bottom that were used to keep the kook actors from drifting away while they were in the actual ocean.

YOu guys are sure dredging up memories in this Geezer. Thinking I used to surf in the winter in Santa Cruz with nothing but a wetsuit vest on in my younger days. Yeoowww! I must have really wanted to surf.
