This is one of those things that I do naturally and have never thought about posting.I can’t recall anyone else bringing it up either.Anyway…after rolling out my glass and cutting the laps I use a wallpaper brush to stretch the glass out on the blank. These are just big wide flat brushes that paperhangers use and you can get them at home depo.It really makes quite a difference and takes about 10 seconds.I got this idea on the post below about “Creases”.By stretching the weave you have less tendancy to get creases in the flats when you get a little to agressive with the squeegee.I learned this from an old Santa Cruz glasser named Jeff Thompson, used to work for Doug Haut.I wonder where he is??
Rodge!..I use the wallpaper brush in precisely the same manner. Great, yeah?! Thanks for the post! A body tends to take things for granted, sometimes, and it’s never overkill to mention good tips like this. By the way, any news about the release of your Damascus glassing video/instructional?! Thank-you, T.
Funny you should ask.Matt from Damascus flew in last week and we spent four days doing the narration.Kinda weird for me to talk about what I was doing for an hour and a half.I did it with a sense of humour geared for beginners. It was fun.As for a release date I can’t tell you for sure…its in Damascus’s hands. Before you guys jump on Damascus just remember that its being done on the side.Matt is a full time advertising Guru of some sort with a full time job like myself. The photography looks unreal to me…better lighting or something. It was tough on Matt when everyone hammered him about the lighting in Jim Phillips Shaping Video…but it was shaping room.what can one do??
Howzit Mr. Clean, I use a squeege which seems to work well.Aloha, Kokua
Thanks for the little but useful tips.
Never thought of it but it’s very handy.

Arnaud
…RB,
…In the archives some years back, I posted messages about paste brushes.I use them in shaping to brush off excess chips/dust(I don’t use my air blower til the end)and in glossing and hotcoating(after cutting them up to size).
…I never mentioned it’s use for pre-lam flattening, but I use a full sized one for this. It’s great to see others out in the world working the system for more improve tools.
…I got my wallpaper brushes at the old Standard brands Paint stores back in the early 70s.I have several, very soft, white/clear bristle brushes, and have not run across them since…I’m sure they are out there…I just haven’t put the time into looking for replacements due to having what I need.
…Hey,Roger,and Damascus Productions:Thanks for the comp I.O.U. guys a favor.THANK YOU !!!Herb
Know what I tried that tip, Got the brush from HD and its to stiff it wrecks the glass, well the one i found does anyway, HOWEVER it works great for taking all the dust and chunks off the lam after lap grinds, right onto the floor instead of blowing into the air. ALways works out somehow.
There are two kinds of wallpaper brushes. One is like giant paintbrush and like Herb said is great for sweeping off dust. The one I use for stretching the weave on glass looks more like big comb, about 10inches long and a real thin line of bristles.
Hello Roger,
good tip. can you post a photo of one of this bushes? or maybe write a link.
I just want to know how are this brushes to buy one here in Spain.
Good waves.
Damn good idea. I’ll bet it’d be ideal for things like canvasing decks ( canvas laid in paint on top of wood) as well, something you want to set flat without risking a corner catching the weave.
I was going to find mine and scan it, but …damned if I know where it is. So:
Sold as a wallpaper smoothing brush or wallpaper smoother, this one is 12" ( about 30 cm ) long. The body is wood, the bristles are approximately 1" ( 25 mm) long for vinyl wall coverings, 2" for non-vinyl. See http://www.gamusa.com/NewFiles/wallptools.html for other flavors.
Again, another slick trick from Cleanlines. I like it.
Coque…I have been trying to email you but it kicks back.Try sending one to me if you get this message.I have something funny for you (but OK). Thanks Doc…thats the brush I was talking about. RB

Roger, What’s up with the tape over the logo on your hat in the video?
It’s a gansta thing.
Sorry, I know Swaylocks is not really known for humor but with SuferMag’s forums sprouting ads I am under a self-imposed boycott and will be spending more time here and bringing some humor along for the ride.
Rob
He He…I did that to cover up a surfco. logo.I felt that the film was going to sell billions of copies and get an Acadamy Award,Tony Award,Cannes Festival Award and maybe the Nobel Prize to boot…By showing the logo
Damascus could have possibly end up paying millions of dollars in royalties .Damascus Films deleted the shots of my respirator with a hole in it so you could smoke a cigarette while glassing. They were afraid some idiot would take it seriously and cause a lawsuit.Bunch of pussies in my opinion.LOL
Howzit Mr. Clean, How else are we going to have a puff with out the hole. Aloha, Kokua
Kokua…I am currently designing a lightweight collar with a tray to catch the ashes.Nothing worse than a big hot burning ash on a wetted out deck .Have you figured out how to light one without getting sticky resin on your Zippo lighter yet? What about all the butts stuck in the resin on the floor and on your shoes when the fire marshall comes in?
Howzit Mr Clean, We don’t need no stinking Fire Marshall’s coming around, remember this is rural Kauai. Plus I glass most of the boards for the firemen and the lifeguards on the Noth Shore so the last thing they’re going to do is shut me down, Small town politics at it’s finest. One thing I refrain from is toking when lamming so no ashes in the lam jobs, but there are butts on the floor. Aloha, Kokua

Respirator attachment with a vaccuum for the ashes ( similar hookup to the super-duper Clark planer vaccuum hose attachment) , a twist or two of Nichrome wire left over from the hot-wire foam cutter with a small power source for the lighter, pushbutton switch. I hate getting resin on my new Zippo. New because I keep losing the damned things.
Worried about dust explosions from hot ashes and such while shaping? They make these nifty little mini-cyclone vaccum attachments for a 5 gallon bucket, which you can fill half full of water before drawing the formerly ash-containing air to the dust laden main vaccuum line.
Technology is wonderful stuff…
I object to glamorizing cigarettes. Next thing ya know you’ll be encouraging our young people to skip school and go surfing.
But seriously, I do question washing your hands in acetone as shown on the video. Bad example for them
