Aloha Brasco:

What type of chute are you looking for, one of the original Skil chutes or something better?

I might be able to help you out on either. I’ll take a look in my Skil cabinet as I think I might have an extra fiberglass chute for the Skil. This chute fits over the air outlet side of the motor and then over the dust chute so you get air assisted dust evacuation, works really well.

I’ll take a look today and let you know. I also have some of the original chutes for the planer.

Are you the guy who made the fiberglass chute? Wasn’t there a thread showing the build process? Please pardon me not doing a search, it just occurred to me.

Aloha surfthis:

No! I did not make them, there is someone on Oahu that makes them out of fiberglass and I got mine from Fiberglass Hawaii many years ago! Infinity Surfboards used to make a very similar one out of plastic but they were not as solid as these fiberglass ones.

I would love a dust chute that attaches to the Skil that vents straight up and hooks to a shop vac…

Ive seen them in use, but not for sale.

Aloha Jerzag:

I have one that I designed and had made up on an FDM machine out of ABS plastic, I love it. I use it to hook my Skil planer to a Clark Foam vacuum system, works great. The only downside is that it cost a lot of money to have it made as FDM is not cheap, but it was a lot easier than making it myself.

There recently was a thread that showed how to make one, it is a really good thread and I plan to look into making one using some of the ideas.

Hi Robin. Ill search for that thread. Do you have any photos of your set up?

Aloha Jeremy:

Attached are photos of the chute that I designed and have been using for the last few years.

The stock dust chute is just a bit of sheet-metal that slides into the grooves on the top-side of the planer body, and would be easy to fabricate.

I made this one:

to use with an overhead vacuum attachment. It wraps around and uses the motor’s blower for a little extra boost. Vacuums are nice both because of the dust containment as well as letting the planer run cooler (If you didn’t want to use a vacuum, you could make one with a side-exhaust).

It was made by using the “lost-foam” technique: gluing some eps to the planer body itself, then shaping and glassing (with epoxy), popping it off and acetone-ing out the foam. If I were to do it again I’d first seal the eps with white glue or latex paint and/or wax, because the eps left a nasty surface inside the hood, which was a pain to sand out.

Nice one Allan. This is very similar to the ones I got from Fiberglass hawaii except there were not setup to be hooked to a vacuum. They also used the blower from the motor and it sure worked good, I used to run the planer to blow dust off the board!

Does yours just sit over the planers dust outlet?

How do you keep it on the planer?

-Robin

thanks robin, i sent you a pm.

You know, either of those would be better than what I have now (stock). Does choking off the exhaust vent prevent proper cooling though?

Robin…did you mention you had some for sale?

I may try to rig something up this weekend.

I should take another photo of it- it snaps over the body of the planer and motor housing (there’re two tabs of uni-“S” that hold it on by friction- its a pretty solid mount- no screws needed) and the “chimney” is directly above where the chute would be, so everything goes straight up. And, yes it was inspired by the hoods at Fiberglass Hawaii, but I wanted to have one with the vacuum attachment.

Balsa had a great vacuum port how-to on a recent thread, and Ninth Island had a very good looking carbon fiber one on another thread. Using a vacuum port allows the motor to run cooler (less dust drawn in) and extends the bearing life. Putting any restriction in front of the fan outlet port isn’t a good idea unless it is at least the diameter of the fan away (bad pressure drop will happen). If just a deflector is wanted, most guys who converted to vacuum systems probably have the original Skil ones for sale.

My buddy Charlie Wong makes the ones for Fiberglass Hawaii. They sell for $35 plus shipping. I sold a few for him on EBAY. Let me know if you are interested and I’ll ask him if he has any ones available.

Pete, you just made me realize that I had promised to send one to Kawika…

…and never did.

Kawika, if you read this, I sincerely apologize. Lots of work, etc, etc… I’m gonna try and finish it and send it to you soon.

uncle d

thank you for the offer, but i have made arrangements with robin (hand-shaper) concerning the dust chute.
