Water temps US west coast

I surfed northern Ventura County on Dec 4 in board shorts for over 2 hours(1 day after heavy rains). I also surfed Jalama in trunks for the first time ever on Oct 4. The buoys in Northern Cal were above 60 deg F in October.

Has any of you Central Coast or Nor Cal guys been able to surf in board shorts this Summer /Fall?

yes

Finally I beleive all that “Global warming” stuff.

I heard wetsuit companies are going out of business.

How far north?

Jalama and north has all ways been 3/2 or 4/3 land for me and the hood and booties goes on in winter.

I surfed in my 3/2 last weekend up here in San Francisco.

El Nino

Lots of game fish, surf and trunkin’ it!

mid coast Oregon has been hanging around 56 - 57 degrees, which is hella warm for this time of year.

2 weeks ago the air temp was 34 in the early am, water 58.  Crazy…

I think it is still 65 or so - I wore a shorty today and it was fine…  It was 70 + from May all the way through until the week before Thanksgiving…

I lived mid coast Oregon and surfed there in the mid 90s. I can’t remember what the water temps were but 6/5/4 booties, hood, and gloves were mandatory. I shed the gloves and hood a couple times in summer if the north winds were down. 56 is epic but the sea life must be trippin.

This evening temps

This year the California current has been offshore.  Here in HB the water has been the warmest in at least the last 20 years.(I haven’t seen the tables yet) during the summer but has now dropped into the 60’s.  Local areas that are pooling (current is offshore, warm water is trapped against the coast) are seeing warm water.  Our fathers were right, just wait and the weather (and water) will change.  Enjoy it while you can!  Imagine 3-5 ft. Rincon in trunks!  LOL  Just my 2c…

When I migrated up from HMB 7 years ago, thought the water would be much colder then it turned out to be.  Does get into the 48-49 range mid-winter, however,  frequently gets in the 58-60 range during summer, which brings albacore in just 20 miles off the coast.  Actually warmer then the SF bay area coast is during the summer.  Air temps can get pretty brutal during the winter when it’s off-shore.  Not east coast brutal, but cold enough.
