I’ve got a couple of older boards that have been in storage for quite awhile. They are completely covered in wax from top to bottom. Is their a solvent I can use to help break it down and get it off? What is a good trick that somebody could share with me? Regards
Warm sunlight and an old credit card should clean any board.
I agree with Rob, above. just set the board(s) in the warm sun for a bit of time, next to some shade. When the wax gets soft (but not liquid), scrape it off. I prefer a store bought spatula because you can get some large ones and the spatula conforms to the board dings (if any) and curves and the spatulas I use have a spoon shape so it easier to pick up and remove the wax, I think, better than a credit card-BUT, a card is fine. This method will get the wax off but leave a film of wax on the board. To get ALL the wax residue completely off, take a handfull of sawdust and sprinkle on the board and wipe off with a towel; the sawdust will clean the board to a shine.
For years I collected all the wax scraping as one BIG ball of wax…It saw so ugly…Grey, with black spots…Sand and grass …Hideous…The size of a volleyball… One year at Christmas we had a “white elephant” gift exchange with some family…I put the wax ball in a cute decorative bag…My sister in-law chose the bag, peaked inside and though there was a BRAIN in the bag…She freaked out till she realized what it was…I wonder why my in-laws think I’m weird…??? A “Pickle” works good, too. Fill a section of old pantyhose w/ foam dust, tie at both ends, and apply some elbow grease.
Use your ladies hair dryer, It’ll scrap off real nice!! Just don’t get wax all over it, that could cause trouble. k
leave it in the sun till it hits liquid stage and wipe away with paper towels.
Although this method is not enviromentalty sound, it works. Leave the board in the sun until the wax get gushy, and then scrape. After all of the wax is off rub the board with sand. Please be kind and dispose of all the gooy blobs in a respectable manner.
