Weber Performer fin

Some time ago I came across an early 60’s Performer. Dinged, dented, twisted & badly sunburned. Being a decent shaper, I decided to make a copy. I glassed it with Volan & tryed to stay as close to original as possable. My question is, What kind of fin to use. Some people have said to use a hatchet fin, my feeling is that this board came with a flexable cutaway. Any Weber experts out there? The board is 8’-9" 19 1/2" nose, 15 3/4 tail, 23 1/2 mid, with a 7" square tail, 50/50 rails. The board has been hanging in my shop unriden for over a year, & although it is a great conversation peice, I am getting the itch to take it for a spin.

Ray, My brother Jerry is Weber’s lead shaper. If I can catch him later today I will find out for you.

One you should try is a True Ames cutaway. 8, 8.5, or 9" It will nose ride with this fin fine and it’ll be a little more agile than with a wide base fin. If you want to really have some fun put one of Cheyne Horan’s star fins on it unless you’re gonna be in the kelp. The beauty of fin boxes you can find what suits your style best. Sounds like it’s time to take that stick out and enjoy, Good Surfin’, Rich

Jerry has not been in today. But, I checked with the guys in the retail shop. They said that the Hatchet and the Performer were developed for each other. So, If you want your board as close to original as possible that’s the way to go.

The Performer came standard with a ‘hatchet’ fin,(a very early version of a cutaway with a very square look) some were glass, and at one stage they were a semi flexible propylene material, I know because I have a 10’ 2" out in the garage, (these fins I believe came out of the Morey-Pope factory) which sounds like what yours has, keep it for it is the original. However if it is lost, many companies such as True Ames or Rainbow Make a Hatchet replica that will do the job.
