wet foam

i cracked my nose today and the foam is wet. How long does it usually take for the foam to dry out so i can repair it? how do i tell when it is dry. i know i can feel where the glass is removed, but what about down underneath glass? should i rip it back a few inches or just give it a few days to dry? thanks for the info.

Search the archives on ding repair, drying dings, etc. plenty of info. If you still have questions, c’mon back. There’s a good one called Drying Dings.

DON’T rip back the glass… it’s always a bad move. I dunno where people get the idea that it’s something you should do. If you got a cut on your finger, would you start looking for a skinning knife? Of course not.

Instead, give it some time. How long? Well, that depends, as my old philosophy professor used to say. What kind of foam, how long you stayed in after dinging it, how warm it is where you have the board and so on. Do place the board so that the ding is the lowest point on the board, let gravity be your friend.

I once had a board take 48 hours to drain ( the guy had blithely surfed it for another hour or two before coming in, very open celled polystyrene foam) , another ( plain ignorance on the part of the owner - closed cell polystyrene foam and probably months of neglect) I just ignored in the cellar for three weeks and assumed it was dry after that.

Of course, after I fixed it the aforementioned knucklehead put it on top of his car, went out driving around to show the world that he was a surfer…

Minor problem, though, it was winter and he’d gotten some salt on his car. But he had the answer to that one.

That’s right, he went to the carwash. Right through, ripped off two of three fins, great gaping craters that were now full of soapy water and hot wax treatment. Car was clean, though. Downright shiny.

I turned that repair job down. I like a technical challenge now and then, but…

hope that’s of use

doc…
