Some are afraid that it is a threat to the United State’s world dominance.
==============================================
Yes, I suppose there are some who are ignorant and think that what makes the USA dominant is it’s military, and capitalistic philosophy, but that is not why most people in the world would want to come here. The thing that makes the US great is the Judeo-Christian values which the Constitution, as well as our freedoms are built upon. Now I’m not trying to preacch or push these religious values, so keep yer cool soulstice. I am just stating a fact.
Globalization is threatening to me because I fear that a global government will decide that many of the rights and values that I hold dear are not equally shared across the globe and therefore must be outlawed. Take corporal punishment for instance. There are many countries where it is illegal. Having three kids I can vouch for it’s effectiveness and virtues, but even more so my own children, who are all older teens, support it. What about Christmas? Do you think in a global community where Christianity is not the primary religion the other religiuons will tolerate it’s existence? Of course not! How about Euthenasia? In some countries if you get to be a "burden to the society they eliminate you. How Hitlarian is that. The Bible/Judeo-Christian values teach us to honor our elders. That is a beautiful thread in the fabric of our culture here in the USA. Again, I am not trying to espouse Religion, so forgive me for refering to it, but it is the foundation of much of our country/culture. There are probably some very cool things about Islam and the middle east. But I don’t want my daughter to be subjugated to their ideas toward woman. No sir, I heartily reject globalism and staunchly support the nationality of this great country. Granted, it is fffffffaaaaaaarrrrrrrrr from perfect, but I beleive that it is the most desirable destination for those seeking a better life.
So what does this have to do with surfboards? Everything and nothing. You all can fill in the middle!
By the way, I think that those who are in favor of globalization are well intentioned but ignorant of just how great the culture of this country is and how evil much of the rest of the world is.
bmg,
Good points. I never read Friedman so I don’t judge him specifically. There are tons of people out there writing books and coining phrases to sell books. Those are the buzzword crafters I speak of. So many times they are just making elaborate observations and not really contributing any original thought. All they do is spin it a different way and come up with a nice name to generate interest. The phrase Global Economy on it’s own seems like nothing new to me. It’s kind of like saying power struggle. There’s always been one. The Economy has for hundreds of years been global to some degree.
Again, it sounds a little utopian. It’s not all economics. I don’t mind helping the poor Chinese factory worker but there is an ugly political aspect. As a consumer I should try to be aware that whatever country I buy from, a portion of that sale funds the government and their politics. There are countries out there that are driven by more than economics and they would like nothing better than to hurt you, me and our families.
I blame it all on Jeffwells!
He started this darn thread because another thread spun off of surfing into politics and economics. Jeff, good job buddy. You must be laughing every time one of us blowhards can’t resist throwing in our two cents. LOL!
Has anyone been surfing lately? This rain has been keeping me out of the water.
And I don’t want to hear about pollution, overcrowding, the decline of western civilization, yadah, yadah…I just want to know if anyone got some good waves.
I worked on my two boards today. (The stingray and the 13’ stand-up)
I’ll take globalism over Jihadism/tribalism any day!
Steering back a bit towards surf-related topic……I have no problem whatsoever buying a wetsuit or a Harbour Freight manufactured in China. I also own a few Surftechs, but much prefer hand shaped boards. 9 of the last 10 boards I have purchased, including three custom hand shaped boards from Geoff McCoy through Solosurfer’s participation in the global economy by importing Geoff’s boards to the U.S. from AU, have been handshaped.
p.s. Solo……Great Flaming Lips CD!
Howzit going BMG. I bet your ready your new stix. We have had discussions on this. We really don’t disagree at all on the big picture. It’s so hard on forums to get the full expression of what your trying to say and keep it interesting. As I have said in another post. I am not against global economy or importing from other countries. Far from it. I just have a problem when the only thing other countries are selling is labor so greedy multi national corprations can make more profit. I critisize Surftech for some of their claims and how they ride for me, but I have no problems with them following their dreams nor with anyone riding them or buying them. I am 100% capitalist, but not 100% profit at any cost. The creme will rise to the top (as your about to find out) I drive a 10 year old Benz E450 made in Germany sold off an American lot. I love Japanese knife steel (such as cold steel uses) and I like Australian surfing products as well as American and others. Yes: Yoshimi is a great CD.
Brandon you hit the nail on the head about suits here in Sfla.Still laughing.Skip the beaver tail. The flushing and that damn tail…I have the coolest O’neil short john from waaaaay back in the day and near mint.Has the old logo of the guy soul arching on a longboard. No use for it.Too small.

Agreed. Fortunately, my grandmother from Russia, grandfather from Romania, other grandfather from Ireland and other grandmother from Australia all thought the same thing.
No surfing for me today. My ten-year old son and I did have a nice day of snowboarding. I seem to get more bruises from snowboarding than surfing.

Ryan,
You are right. It has been going on for a long time. For a nice readable history of the last 13,000 of global activity, read Jared Diamond’s ‘Guns, Germs, and Steel.’ The book has a great description of the settlement of Hawaii and Polynesia.
