I just picked up a Hitachi on eBay for a decent price…it was so much easier than using a surform for the entire process. I ended up using the Hitachi to foil the blank and do the first few rail bands. I probably could have even done all of the rail bands and some of the bottom contours but I chickened out. The surform just felt better - not as accurate - but less of a chance of buggering it up.
I couldn’t settle on a glassing schedule as I went through the process… I thought about a light coke bottle tint and almost sent it off. I don’t have the capacity to learn to glass right now so there was no question I was sending it out.
I decided on the True Ames TW glass on quad fins… 7 degrees of cant front and 4 degrees rear both@ 1/8" toe. I have a magic quad in the 7’ range with a very similar set up so I left it alone.
Deck 6/4oz E w/ resin leash loop… Bottom 6oz E w/ a fin patch. Clear gloss/polish w/ some maroon tint towards the tail. More pics in a few weeks when I have the time and get it back. Next time I need to glass myself or at least part of it…no more easy way out! I just need more time in the day.
These little double-enders are a beach break special…with a few fin options… super durable composite paulownia on a Surfblanks Pink core…weighs in at 6.5 lb , with the quads.
very nice kayu
Very nice Kayu… What are the dims? That fin box opens up so many possibilities.
Building a Rusty Slayer template board for a friend going to Indo.
Pretty much already had the template by combining a couple templates.
He wanted it done with one of my “Dissect Series” blanks.
13 glue lines to stiffen the board which works well in the tube.
Blank here is templated and cut for gluing.

This thread causes my computer to go wonky - something about the images. I love this thread, but kinda have to avoid it.
Me too…same issues.
I wonder if it’s because of the size… Time for a “Part II”???
Good point. I used to go through threads like this and correct the image problems, i.e. download the photos and re-size them, then re-post the images in the right size. But its time consuming, and a thankless job, and I’m trying to scale back my time investment in non-paying thankless tasks, lol, so I think a new thread would be a good place to start.
And just a note (that no one will pay attention to, haaha) please resize photos to a reasonable size before posting. The forum software will re-size it for the screen, but if the image is oversized, it will still cause problems. Just saying. On this page alone finsout, cornishsteve, kayu, foamdust, crazyeddy, and johnnylj have all posted giant images. Barry Snyder is the only poster on this page using images that have been re-sized to a reasonable size for posting.
To check the image size, just right click on it, and click “copy image URL”, then go to that url, and you will see the image as posted. If its bigger than your computer screen, its gonna cause problems on some computers, regardless of the size it appears in the thread.
actually, this is Part II already.

Get a better computer, a tablet or a better internet connection. I use this site on a variety of devices in my house and the only one that is even remotely slow is my 8 year old laptop running Vista. Even my cheap Android tablet loads these pages just fine.
Well, I haven’t been on Sways as much lately as I was in the (distant) past. I have a preferred build method down now and usually only come to ask questions. But I remember I used to like this thread to see what people were doing. So I’ll put some pics of my last two builds.
The “Barracuda,” made last year, is meant for my local winter spot which is mostly longboards. It carves the waves like butter (I use rasta keels in the board, not the thruster set up shown). I love it but it fails on a second design goal- to compete with longboards. It catches waves much more like a shortboard, even tough it is 7’-7" . I cannot chase them down from outside which makes using it problematic said spot.
The second one I just finished at the beginning of the quarantine when the beaches in LA County were closed. I haven’t used it yet because I’ve been rehabbing an injured back since December and have just started surfing again, longboarding at above unnamed spot. Not quite ready for the instantaneous pop up shortboarding requires, but I can’t wait to try it. Soon.

my first pair of fins. i was hoping for a 4 degree cant, but it came out to 1 degree on these fins due to technical problems with my jig and fin base. wish id just kept em 0. im switching to gearbox. not noticing any immediate problems though after surfing them yesterday and today. if anything this has taught me that cant is not very important on twin fins. i have a buddy that surfs twin fins in some serious waves. he swears by 0 cant 0 toe in glass ons on the board he shapes. 7’2 twin keel at sprecklesville outer reefs on big winter swells…5’0 flat as heck boogie board looking twin fin (the fins look like rabbit ears set at an angle set very far back) at overhead maalaea freight trains. he blows my mind. i think i will follow his formula for twins from now on. 0 cant 0toe in. could do tight cutbacks. made it above the lip on a few straight air attempts and almost landed one (never practiced airs really but always throw in the attempt here and there in some closeouts) . all in some pretty mediocre half-gutless windswell. theyre 6" deep.
