well the pic didnt work but the link did so just scroll down a bit and you will see what im talking about
World Record…who cares.
PS: Tow Ins don’t count anyway.
I didn’t click the link, but if you are talking about Garret; I would say OH Yeah! Listened to his interveiw with Sheperd Smith on Fox. I’m impressed.
Ken Bradshew Just might be sticking pins in to a Garret Vodo doll right now.

historic ground breaking
where do I get a hat just like he is wearing in the video?
…ambrose…
That wave was big… but… this came out around the same date and it kind of impressed me a bit more than Garret’s wave:

It IS a world record for a huge, deepwater, big mushball peak that goes only directly forwards towards shore.
Peel? Yeah, directly straight off adolph.
That said, of course I’d be scared to drop into that peak.
Most of the photos and video of that day were shot from a high vantage point, which really increases the apparent size of the wave face. Eyewitness accounts place it at 60 feet.
WAY more impressive IMO:

Bye the way, can someone figure out how to embed videos now that Youtube doesn’t have the “long link” option any more…
This is annoying.
way, way more impressive…
what a contrast
G-Man the rootin tootin MavSup’n, Icebergcalfin, poweredsurfboardn’ hellaciousmushburgn selfpromotin rodeoclown…
and
Nathan the Quiet, dragon slayer extraordinaire …
hahaha, exactly!
No contest
Yeah, Tpoo is way more impressive.
But just the feeling of CortezBanks has to be the scariest, 100 miles out to sea, knowing dry land doesn’t exist within sight…
Shipsterns is pretty craggy. Amazing Bboarders can handle it.
What’s your scariest spot?
I got 2. BodegaHead, the little island off the hilltop, but not the mushy right. The LEFT…scariest left I’ve ever seen.
and how about that right reef wave going into S FarallonIsland? Seen it at around 8’ from LindayJ, a 50’ steel hulled fishing boat. Faster than Maalea, but grinding on rocks the size of tables, a tow in window, exposed to long period W, SW, and S swells.
actualy, G-Man is planning on riding the reef at the Farralone Islands the next time it’s 12’ @20,
standing on the back of a local 20’ White Shark he lasso’s and halter breaks the same day.
After that, he has something really big planned…
It’s not really 12’ @ 20 seconds, you know when those little chihuahua dogs hug people’s ankles and start humpin… well, a whale is humping the buoy!
Been out to the Farallones maybe 30 days in the winter seasons.
That break is best at medium low tides. Lower tides expose a couple of rocks that are almost dry along the wall of the wave.
Higher tides force the waves to break too close to the shore, with some sections almost breaking on dry rocks.
It works on NW swells, but the huge wrap doesn’t allow for a possible connection thru to the inside.
Hey Tony, sorry I didn’t contact you while I was in PR. Where you surfing around Jan6th or so, when the horizon in front of LasMarias and IsleVerde was breaking easily a quarter mile outside those rocks that stick out at PuntaLasMarias’ outside reef?
I was sitting around at the rec park while scores of police were hanging around in case 5 kings day broke into a drunken brawl. Even the cops were pointing out to the horizon at the huge swells breaking out there, and quite often, the cops and the beach patrol would stand around with binoculars staring out to sea. Must have been at least 12’
Hello Lee, no problem, glad you enjoyed your trip. It’s 3 kings day, it’s a catholic celebration where they commemorate when the three kings from orient visited baby Jesus… Yea, that swell was good in Rincon and Wilderness, was kinda busy those days but got to bodyboard some nasty beach break in the North…
At least you got out in the water.
The beach at SanBlas had maybe 4’ shorepound, but with the outer reefs solid whitewater and stacking up 6-10 deep with visible swells, the cops weren’t letting anyone in the water after 2PM. They had a heck of a time persuading the few kiteboarders who insisted they had the right and the skill to go out. Lots of arguments, some threatening posturing from both sides. In the end, nobody was allowed past the swimming lines after 3PM.
Oh, 3 kings…sorry.
G/f’s brother said he used to surf that wave out in IsleVerde out to the E, way outside, usually pretty big, and kinda a weird triangular shape with the face coming at you at an angle.
Hey, have you ever checked out that right sandy wave at the nearest island to Fajardo? There’s like an apartment/condo out there, reachable by boat only. That right just peels clean and safe, but I"ve never seen it on swells bigger than 4’. We can see that island if we walk up to the E condos where we stay.
I think, world record or not, GMac’s wave was huge, I am sure most of us commenting (including myself) would not have paddled or towed out to surf that swell in that location but… I am sure some other nooks and crannies might have been very good. That’s one of the things I love about big swells, if the big wave spot x is not that clean or if it’s too big for my abbilities and/or condition or if I don’t feel like getting my ass kicked that day, one can always find other spots that rarely break, have a more “user friendly” size and are usually cleaner, it is like that almost everywhere I have traveled.
To me, I think no one should surf big waves for world records, trophies or prize money, they are bonuses. Yes, I understand that some people support their families with winning events and working for sponsors but large waves are dangerous and should only be surfed for the love of big waves and for the awe and appreciation of nature they inspire… I like what the guys at the big wave tour do, they split the prize money, I think those guys are just very happy of making a career out of chasing large swells around the globe. The one question I would like to ask any one of them is ¿How exactly do you guys travel with 10’ rhino chasers? I have heard of Delta cargo but haven’t comfirmed it…
LeeD, I will send you a PM so we don’t hijack the thread.
The guys; I know who tow in travel around with sub 6’ tow in two footstrap boards, and work a a rental on the PWC for the tow. The sled is something they often make from HomeDepot materials.
Most of the boards I’ve seen are 5’10" x 16.6 needle nose rounded squash tails, tri fins
