I use exactly same rendom orbital sander as Stingray (label AEG in France) and a Boch smaller one modify with soft pad for rails, both connect to a shop vacuum label Karcher. I find it’s really efficient for dust and sand. I just shape one or two boards a month but i do many repair.
Lemat, I have the little one from Ridgid (5-inch?) and it is good for finish sanding, but even with coarse grit it takes way too long to sand a board. Does the big one (6 inch) do any better? I’d love to hook up my vac to it. It would make my neighbors happy too.
Surf4fins, anyone, can you really sand a board from start to finish with the big Ridgid orbital? thx
It seems that dust collection at the source is a great method for the people of swaylocks, and that’s OK, but the machine I am talking about really helps when your 5 or 6000 milwaukee is buzzing along with 50 grit over 10 ounce volan. Me I never really had the itch to sand, I don’t hate it, I just consider it a necessary evil. Marsh something like the Torit model 64 is totally bitchen for a small room because it wheels. They are on ebay used right now, and you can see they have a ton of units in various sizes. They even outfit premade shipping containers for completely custom sanding rooms, for aerospace, and defense.
Yorky, you definitely need help. And your right I am nothng, but this little nothing is buzzing around in your head. Hopefully the synapses start firing correctly, because well… Oh this is a thread about dust control. Try to focus, breath, atta boy…
i sand in my shaping bay. open the door and put a box fan on the floor facing out…
this is for about a dozen boards a year so not too much to worry about - i usually only glass my personal boards. dust collection for foam - broom. it doesnt feel right if its not dusty…always have a mask!
when i was a sander in hawaii sanding 10 a day, the exhaust in my booth was so strong, it would take a piece of sandpaper right off the shelf and out of the room. it sounded like a jet engine getting ready to take off. i like the setup kokua detailed out for sanding exhaust/dust collection.
Yorky, I don’t know who you are, never heard of you before this thread, but I went and checked you out. I know now you build surfboards and have been shaping since '89. I wish you nothing but success. Yea Yorky.
Please do not call me “The Fly”, as that name is already taken. JP Van Sway, Aka “The Fly”. Master board builder, who did his some of his best work at Hobie’s when that name really meant something.
I’m just a garage hack and use this inexpensive setup:
Shop Vac w/ HEPA filter and dust bag + Clark flexy hose connected to one of these dust shrouds on my sander:
The shroud catches so much of the dust that almost nothing escapes. I’ve sanded entire longboards and don’t even have a thin layer of dust on the floor. I’m sure it’s not as good as those full-on dust collection systems, but considering it takes up no space and costs ??don’t remember, maybe 50 bucks? it seems to be a good call for my usage.
Howzit yorky, I don't know what has started this thing between you and ghetto but it seems like things are way out of hand and everybody needs to calm down and cool off. I know you just opened an unreal factory and I hope things are going good for you and I hope this whole thing is not due to stress from being in business. I am actually surprised the moderators have let this thread get this far and I don't know why you are quesioning ghettos qualifications as a board builder unless youknow something the rest of us don't know. We are all brothers here on Sways and we need to act like that. I am not trying to get in the middle of whatever is going on but just trying to calm things down and enjoy this thread. Aloha,Kokua
I have a rotative “classic surfborads sander” too. I found the orbital really faster. I do epoxy hotcoat and i wait that it’s well cure before sand. I sand with 60 grit, finish by hand on rails, about 30 minutes for my last board (6’4 wombat). Then poly finish and sand with 240 to 400 all with orbital and hand, about 30/40 minute. Standard stock surfboard finish quality.
I started with sanding boards just like the Glassing 101 Video. Shit flying everywhere. Massive amount of clean up time. Then I set up blue tarps to contain the mess. Still too much clean up time. I have posted my current set up more than once. Sanding with the 7" Home Depot sander seems slower but I no longer have three hours of clean up time. I got some tips on Swaylock's and my vacuum exhuast now exits the shop via PVC pipe. I can do better. I'm working on it, I toasted my Home Depot sander. It's under warranty. I've replaced lots of brushes and switches on my other power tools over the years but I've never totally toasted a sander. $129. Worked great for 2 years. Buyer beware. I get my sander back next week......
I’ve been meaning to try and see if their 9-inch shroud fits over my power pad. It’s like the rigid plastic shroud pictured above in concept, but it’s a flexible cloth shroud, for bigger applications. They don’t mention power pads (of course, nobody has heard of surfboard making) but I think it might work, and if it does, it would be sweet, because now I’m doing all my rails by hand wetsanding to keep the dust down.
I really like Dustless Technologies, here’s the link to their big shroud:
