What is up with board sales right now? Anyone else struggling to sell boards?

Hello everyone. You know, I was standing in a glassing room yesterday pondering the original question that started this thread. As I looked around I realized that every board on the racks was EPS/Epoxy. I walked around and double-checked, probably 12-15 boards all kicking off in various stages on the racks. Change. Everyone talks about it, hypes it up, alternative materials, alternative construction bla bla bla. But from my perspective- 10-20 guys ordering some hyped new construction over the period of 3 months is not change. A glassing room that cranks out 7-10 a day with the racks full of an alternative construction, that is change. With change comes consumer hesitation- uncertainty about what to buy- and a bigger pie to choose from. Because of that, the $$ is spread around more- instead of buying all his boards from the local Pavel copy machine, now Joe Shred is perhaps buying one board from Pavel knock-off master and one from Backyard-EPS-shralpsticks.com. And perhaps a …lost M3456GH XTR to round out the quiver. Throw in Surftech, Aviso, Firewire and the rest of them- things are pretty diverse right now. There isn’t one thing that you can build right now that is a sure sell to Joe Shred. Except boards that are Pink- those sell. I had a girl come in yesterday that wanted to know whether a conventional board painted pink would be more expensive than a Clear Epoxy/EPS board… I asked her why, and she said that she would surf better on a board that was pink. What??? (obviously the best option was EPS/Epoxy that was pink… but she hadn’t explored that option yet.)

Pretty much, unless I sell if for less than what it for cost. I’m now checking out polystyrene as making your own styrene blanks is far cheaper than buying a polyurethane one.

I’ve seen plenty of NSPs, Surftechs and the like as well, but all they do is sit there. And sit there. And sit there. What is going on?

Too much to choose from! It’s like walking into a surfshop and there’s racks and racks of shortboards. How do you choose one when there’s so many? Are you going to examine each and every one? No! I’m beginning to think that there is an oversupply of anything and everything and people are becoming confused.

Alot of business is slowing down. Using your house as an ATM machine has finally ended after 10 yrs straight. Welcome …to reality . What’s kinda scary is A whole generation has NEVER seen slow times or worse.

Carl, eveyrone knows, red boards are the fastest, green boards are the most stable and white boards hit the lip better than anything else out there.

Come on, everyone knows that a board with red rails and clear bottom and deck is the best board regardless of the shape.

Seriously though, I think that over the last couple of years a lot of us have been building quivers of many different kinds of boards, and now with the US economy going into the tank, most people are going to wait a little while before they spend a bunch of money on new boards.

Listen to the guy! That’s the way I see it as well. Belive it or not. Can we spell RECESSION? Going to “Lighting Bolt” tomorrow to pick up a boad that has been there nine months. I’ll sell it at the swap meet or down at Launiupoko on a Sunday (weekend crowd).

Cheers digger sound like you live the probelm your self, I just need another one of me, not a surf board shaper but a surfboard maker.

I have true fear that we are running out of good workers due to low wages and lack of training

doing a one layer glassjob on a board is just start of being a glasser.but theres not many left that can show these production guys

how to do tints ,multy layer laminating, even how to do a sick fin set with a bit more roving a cloth ,anyway wont ramble on, just hope that all the great methods of board building arnt lost to mass production and corprate dollar. regards MILCH
