What kind of longboard ?

Hi there,

Been sufing for about 2 1/2 years now and currently ride a beefy 6’ 10 board. No trouble popping or paddling so not a complete beginner or anything but no genius on the water either. Average height, weight and build.

Am looking to invest in a longboard just to enjoy smaller days more and to also get on more waves for fun, bit unsure of what to get though. I did see a good price on a board 9’0 x 21" 7/8 x 2" 7/8 with boxy rails. Although price is good I have two concerns from doing a bit of reading, is 9’0 too short and should I go for a 9’4 - 6 and also while boxy rails provide greater stability will they hold me back as I imagine a 9’0 board will seem very stable to me after the 6’10 ( a bic 7’9 feels like a barge these days).

Any advice ?

Cheers,

Mully

To make surfing a longboard into a fun challenge & learning experience - rather than just something that’s easy to ride when the surf is small - get one as different from your daily driver as possible. If you want those small days to be interesting, get a big (9’6" minimum) single fin with very little rocker & fairly heavy glassing. Good for building leg strength. You can’t fake your turns, you really have to plan ahead.

If you just want to surf the same way you always do, but with more float, a 9’0" 2+1 would be fine, with no more than an 8" fin in the center, and 6" or 7" is better…
