???????????? What makes a Legend........A Legend ??????????????

Wins,losses,skills,$ ?

Is it enough to base a movie on ?

Stur the kettle and voice your opinion.

Herb

Hey Herb! Good topic!

I think one criteria would have to be “contributions that have a profound effect on an organization, group, community or industry”

I think longevity would also have to be a major factor.

I can think of a few that fit that bill in the surfing industry.

Gordon Clark

Greg Loehr

Kelly Slater

Laird Hamilton

Al Merrick

Just off the top of my head.

see logger 33’s post on ‘end of an era’ thread…Kp’s head must be swelling!

one who consistantly gives 110%

longevity

humbleness

always rises to the occasion

stands accountable for their own actions

someone who makes a differance

Good question. I’m sure it’s a different answer for everyone. A function of their exposure, knowledge, and experience. Here’s are some:

George Downing

Buzzy Trent

Phil Edwards

Pat Curren *

Alan Nelson *

Mike Diffenderfer *

Butch Van Artsdalen*

Bob Simmons *

Woody Brown * …to name just a few, from the past. The * indicates a Windansea local. Woody, in fact, was the first guy to surf Windansea. All of these guys were either exceptional board builder/designers, riders, or both. Today, Swaylocks own Jim Phillips, is also in possession of those same qualities, and should be on any such list.

Once again Herb exercises us in philosophy.

A little taste of it is good once in while.

Methinks to become a legend one use such elements as these:

Natural inborn talent

Humility

Focus

Internal strength

Vision

Good Fortune

A sense of History

Friends

Hard Work

Perseverance

Few realize such status during their living years.

~But don’t look back, it doesn’t really matter if you’ve burned somebody (-; Yeah right.

Orange wetsuits. definitely orange wetsuits.

The real legends stand up on real merits in the eyes of real people after the legend-makers have moved on to the next flavour-of-the-month.

wikipedia says,

the brothers grimm defined legend as folkktale historicly grounded

legend typicly is a short episodic ,traditional, highly ecotypified

historicized narrative performed in a conversational mode reflecting on a psychological level a symbolic representation of folk belief and collective experiences and serving as a reafirmation of commonly held values of

the group to whose tradition belongs. thank s wiki…for the sixy cent loan.

the stretching of meanings of words by use in context aside

the meaning of ''legend ‘’ like that of ‘long board’ previously discussed at length here by the blue campfire is in flux as I writ and as others contribute.

the turning point was when greg noll sent out invites and put together the ‘‘legends events’’.

the contest made - the 9’ is a long board

the invites made-is a legend.

the fact that you could buy a ticket and go along for a price

compromised the use-meaning of the term

what is a legend?

is a fine contemplation…

the second part of the herbivorious question

instantly skipped by some responses

in favor of listing favorites

and respective forebearers of our

…What are your life experiences like ? …

is an open invitation to spill beans in the fire

to temper

or irretriveably destroy

bullship stories to build upon

for movie contextualization .

in our audio visual culture ‘’ movie ‘’ IS validation.

the singer on the beach

with the mele of the exploits of the surfer

made it possible for the contestant

to return to the beach

in one old hawaiian surf story .

in that cultural context

‘Mele’ was validation.

if I remember correctly

our man was denied

in the story

and the guy with the better song won the contest.

this seems to be the case.

as we age this legacy

may assure our survival beyond life.

A movie so to speak on late night T.V.

I can watch some of em over and over

and still never get em right .

the ‘‘To Me’’ definition of legend

requires repeating a story

over time and repitition

repeats get more and more glorious

the repeats x 3-5-7-9

ad infinitum are what

makes a story enough

to base a movie on.

trim the fat

add the spice

and the sugar

and the flavors

mature and become the

comment to stir saliva and appitite.

I said it before,

Pee wee said at the end of

pee wee’s great adventure

I dont need to watch it ,

I lived it…

is a fabulous joke.

base the movie?

the flip image is of a glass pipe with a movie loaded

and the torch flipped on

in the dark

and richard on fire running down the street in L.A.

what a time to be alive.

base a movie on

the legend of what

we do when we

get up every morning.

A day in the life of herb bill kurt john mike

mark kevin or even me

repeat it enough times

we have legend.

…ambrose…

if we go perhaps to beyond the ledge end

we are in freefall

until we come

crashing to earth.

the artistry is within in the free fall

and the belief in our chosen wings

prolonging glide.

with the right stuff

we can land softly

and with grace.

terra firma awaits us all.

Is the movie our context?

Yes it can be.

I AM A LEGEND!!!

Seals big and small fear me…They write folk songs about me!

Death definitely helps!

Enormous vinyl stickers?

??

The two elements in a legend are.

  1. Having something to do with a legendary event

  2. Recognition of it.

As far as what “makes” a legend the answer is simple, we do.

We were supposed to anyway, that might be where we failed.

That is why I prefer to speak for myself.

I vote Herb!

edit & thee grim brothers!!

Thank you Ambrose. I just figured out what the blue campfire is. Duh!!!

depends on what they are being considered a legend in?

board building for me would be someone who has been doing it for years. has a sturdy client base and when you say their name people know who your talking about.

for surfing for sure Kelly slater is a legend because of what he has accomplished. for surfing its what you accomplish or have records for.

i mean i could make a biographical movie about my growing up years and all the weird stuff that has happened(theres alot) but would i be a legend? nope, just a kid who happens to never have a dull day.

Is being famous

and

being a Legend

one in the same

or

is it a different kind of beast.

This question came about when a person approached me at the board swap this weekend.

He asked me if I was Herb Spitzer,Shook my hand and called me a Legend.

A Legend ?

My 8yr old Daughter Keani didn’t ask me what a legend was…but rather…

…What makes a Legend …a Legend ?

A very good question… I pondered…what makes a Legend…a Legend ?

Time ?

Keani is a very intelligent person,I thought…as she hugs her newly bought, “Duke” ukulele.

That one question from her… was worth the time spent.

From the mouth of babes.

Herb

Herb Spitzer,Legend

well I’ll be!

wait till I tell Fred

LOL!

i am no Great Cathedral…

i am only a little church…

people like Jim Phillips,Bill Barns…etc.

are the Cathedrals of this sport…

i am only a little church.

Herb

He is humble

Your a good guy Herb

after the apocolypse

there will be folklore stories told of how the mighty Spitzer brought a man back to life with a shot gun

I can hear it now,"He was a big man ,stood 6 foot 3,I saw him once surfing RayBay @ 25ft…

Being famous is being know for doing something. That something could be good or bad. There are many people that are famous for doing the wrong things in life. A legend is known for doing something innovative, unique, good etc. Could also be a person that is way ahead of his time.
