Hey Im going to paint my old surf boards but I can’t find acrylic paint any where can I use any other types of paint please reply ASAP I’m hoping to start before school starts for austrailia
Places like Supacheap and repco sell acrylic laquers although there colour range might be limited. A quick google with auto paint or smash supplies should find you some one hopefully not too far away. Acrylic is the staple for pu boards but you could probably use an airbrush paint such as House of Color (a 2 pack and bad stuff without a respirator) or similar. Other than that, you can try your local panel beater and see if you can buy some of his left overs from old jobs, you can always mix these to get other colours as well.
Also, if painting on the foam you may be limited to water based anyway (eps for example), in that case a good quality art acrylic that you can thin for spraying or airbrush paint may be the ticket. If you are interested in water based paint I sell E’tac here in Australia which is IMO the best waterbased ab paint available and is why I sell it ( www.ozairbrush.com (sorry about the plug)). This paint is also friendly with acrylics so you can seal it with Protech or your favourite clear or 2 pack no prob’s.
The only problem I find with water based paints is drying times, where acrylic dries pretty much instantly unless its cold, water based can take a while and may need a hair dryer or similar to help it along on cold days. Because of this it helps to apply it in light coats to aid quick drying and avoid any bleeding under your masking. A good paint such as E’tac covers really well so you don’t need too much anyway and the clear sealer will be your gloss if that is your desired finish.
Hope that’s of some help and let me know if I can help any further, cheers.
Mick.
Thanks Mick I just have one more question how do I get that matt kind of feeling on the board (if you know what I mean)
No prob’s.
Whatever paint you use you will need to seal it with clear if painted on the finished glass job or glass over it if on foam.
You can get a matt additive for your clear (can’t think of the name right now) which saves a bit of sanding. Once cleared you will need to rub it back with say 360 or 400 wet and dry first then 600 with soap. Most sanded finished boards are sanded in the stringer and rail direction rather than in circles, others with more experience could help you with this type of finish.
cheers,
Mick
Okay thanks this helped a lot
