What’s your favorite after surf food !

Howzit John,Funny you should say that because I just bought a sew on patch for my leathers that says "Beer is Food "If they have a any more I will get one for you . As for food after surfs, back in the 60's we would hit 7-11 or der weinerscizle ( spelling) since hot dogs were 15 cents and chili dogs were 20 cents. After moving to Hawaii it was local plate lunchs and on Kauai it's Haumuira's for saimen and bbq sticks, good call oneula. In Hanalei it's Ching Young shopping center plate lunch, so ono. Here in Havasu is "Umberto's" Mexican food. Aloha Kokua

All you guys down under talking about "meat pies" .  My daughter's  been telling me about them.  She's in Houghton Bay NZ.   Most Mexican food any where in So.
Cal.  is good.  Just don't eat in a place that smells like motor oil or has a "B" in the window.  There aren't any really good Island style places in Calif.  I think I'll go back to the Islands for a month or two just to graze in the grass.

Big surf then Maccas - Large Mac meal and a Filet o fish, apple pie and a sundae, go home and snooze it all off, dump, and repeat.

I normally only surf the dawn patrol. if im feeling healthy, a protein shake. If not, 4 or 5 rashers of bacon, 2 eggs, one piece of toast.

Yorky, i like comin home after a morning surf and waking up my wife........  Great way to start the day!

Mcding here you go!

So that's what they look like.  Not like a Pizza, but like a real pie?  Doesn't matter to me as long as they're tasty.  Think they've got'em up in New Plymouth?

That’s the stuff !

Yep, a savoury pie. Beef with a thick gravy encased in pastry. A bit like a sausage, the meat is really "leftovers" of the cow, but damn they taste good. You can get chicken pies, but just doesnt seem right. Steak n mushroom ( as mentioned before ) is pretty nice, beef and bacon too. But i like plain old meat. If they sell them in NZ, they'll still be beef. The country is full of sheep, but they use sheep for other purposes :).

this is going to sound strange but an iced glass of horchata and some buttered sourdough toast… can’t beat it.

if its lunchtime though, i go for a turkey sandwich on sourdough and an ice cold beer.

CERVEZA!!!

First hydrate with water, then… Fresh yellow tail tuna sashimi with a nice cold pilsner style brew like Santo Viejo from Old Harbor Brewery. Two recipes for my sashimi:

Mexican: squeeze a lime and add some Yucateco Mayan Recipe hot sauce.

Asian: put sashimi in bowl, add soy sauce, sesame oil, squeezed lime and do some shark skin ground wassabi powder on the side cured with beer instead of water and seal it in a small plastic bowl for a while so the fumes of the horseradish become intense and spicy!

Tuna must have been caught by you and inmediately gutted and then the head cut off and hung by the tail so all the blood drains out and you have nice pink meat… yummy!

I do a similar thing with Gar fish [large sardine type fish with a long beak just like a mini marlin] I usually spire them at night in shallow waters using a light.

A Kiwi was offered a job as a sheep shearer but didn’t turn up. He said I don’t shear sheep with anyone.

if it's a morning surf, afterwards a fish taco, ceviche, avocado with cheese and sprouts sandwich or a smoothie.(if in oz, definitely meat pies!) more typically i surf in afternoons, so it's home to bbq whatever looks good and toss down some cold tecates.

Da Kine Diego's burrito! Sat Beach, FL

[/quote]

Good to see the insane burrito get a vote! One of the only restaurants specifically designed for after-surf face stuffing. And location is right...

Depending on the location: chicken katsu from Da Kitchen, al pastor super burrito from Taqueria Santa Cruz or chile relleno burrito from the taqueria around the corner from my house.

If I am down in Baja, after a morning ses, eggs any style, fried potatoes with onions/garlic, and a cold one…

My favorite after-surf brunch is in Santa Cruz, down the street from my VERY favorite surf spot : The Cliff Cafe at 41st and Portola for Sue’s awesome Hermana Tofu (Ortega chilies, great Spanish sauce, avocado, sour cream - yum!) If visiting my parents in Ventura the Senior Spanish Omelette at Carrow’s is a close second, and closer to home the San Onofre omelette at Rose’s Sugar Shack. After an evening sesh close to home, Pho or Tom Kha Gai soup are a tasty warm-up!

Aloha Tony,The meat between the bones is the best sashimi, like butter. I've caught them in the past and when I owned my restaurant I cleaned some 200+ Lbs ers and I hung them from the back porch awning to clean.Aloha,Kokua

If it is late in the day, Battered Fish and Fries, we call them Fish and Chips, Aussies call them Feesh and Cheeps from Seedney (Sydney). Originally, pies in NZ were mince pies. Mince is what  US citizens call ground beef or hamburger, made into a stew, no added flavour except salt and pepper and encased in pastry. Today all sorts of combinations are sold, Historically sheep meat wasn't used post World War II, as every scrap was sold to the poor old Brits along with what we called cheese, but was probably more like soap, We also drink a lot of expresso coffee with hot milk. Talking about sheep, i skiied with a guy  in the eighties from Idaho who talked a lot about coke, one of his quotes was, "they say in Idaho, if sheep could cook, there would be a bounty on women". Made me realize that there sheep lovin" cultures all  over the world.
