3M tape and Krylon enamel paint…rattle can for the Low Tech Crew…I would have to stare at it for a while but there’s save in there…some random tape lines and plaid school grirl short skirt stuff…
I know you see dull dogg…But I watch all the home improvement shows…This board has Mile Cyrus’s leggs and Britnay Spears chest…you can get there! Go wild like a Rock Star!!!
Damn Swied. That IS ugly. What were you think’n. I thought I was useless at doing color, but that is really ugly! I was going to suggest giving it away until I saw it. But I don’t know if you will be able to. Maybe use it for a board burning sacrifice during the summer doldrums? Dang, boy! Took guts to post it. That’s for sure. Mike
Alright… the party is over. The picture has been taken down. Back to my original question. Unless you guys can give me some constructive advise on how to save this beast, then I’m going with option (a).
(a) Surf it and flip-off anyone who lifts an eyebrow at it.
I’ve done it a billion times with wall hangers. Spray acrylic paint in color of choice, then top coat with UPOL or some other automotive clear coat. This is the lightest alternative.
You can tape off, fade, cover and pull design, put a lacy table cloth and paint…palm branches and paint,…put board against wall and shoot with paint gun or throw buckets of paint etc… I used to do the board against wall and throw cups of neon paint back in the 80’s. Zillions of ways to cover a bad finish, just get creative
resinhead has the right idea. I’ve disguised some ugly ducklings just by using epoxy paint in a rattle can. Have fun with it, then ride it for more fun.
+1 to Sammy and Jay, I’ve used the appliance epoxy in a rattle can from Lowe’s, the stuff is slow drying but very tough. I didn’t even spray anything over it, just surfed it.
thanks for posting the pic, 'tho, that was fun while it lasted.
When I was lifeguarding some years ago I found an old Crestwood longboard on the beach when I arrived early one morning. No one came to get it, all day. I brought back to the main beach where we clocked in and out, and no one ever came looking for it. So I kept it. It was ugly and banged up. I fixed all the dings and sprayed it white with epoxy from a rattle can. Then I did black rails, freehand. it looked kind of cool. Surfed lousy, though. A real dog. Sold it to a restaurant to use as a signboard, for $200
I surfed this board for the past two weekends in a row.
The first time out was a disaster. I used a fin that I had refoiled to the point where it flexed easily. I could hardly turn the board, and the fin hummed loudly. I don’t know why it hummed, because my trailing edge was pretty sharp. The spot where I placed it was too far forward and the board spun-out on hard turns. This seemed odd because it didn’t look to be too far forward given the width of the tail and the depth of the fin.
I had to see if it was the board itself or just the fin that was making it ride badly. On my second time out I installed a tried and true 9" fin that didn’t flex. This time the board performed like a champ. It was actually pretty awesome. I was really happy with how easy it glided into waves, and how smoothly it turned.
The final color:
I decided to leave the board in its “ugly” state. Now that I know that it rides well I don’t really care. It’s a surfboard after all. I would rather surf a good ugly board than a crappy pretty one. If someone gives me a hard time about it, then all that need to say is…“yeah, but it rips.” :)
Refinements:
Now that I know that the issue is not with the board, but with the fin I need to figure out if how to get it working with a flex fin. My hypotheis is that a flexible fin will need to be taller and/or moved further back on the board than an equivlent non-flexible fin. Does this sound logical?
It’s too cose to the Big Sur campout to reveil the board now. I’m sure it will show up in some of the pictures that get posted afterward. You will know it when you see it.
If anyone raises an eyebrow at it then there either jealous that they can’t make there own or they do make there own and are so up there own ass that they forget when they started off that they had to make mistakes before they got it perfect. I cocked my paintwork up and it bleed to death on my 1St and only board but im proud of making my own
