What to do in Sydney

Heading to Sydney the first week of July for a conference. Anybody have any recommendations of anything cool to see surf wise over there?

Is it worth it to bring a board? Not sure I want to surf any super touristy places, but was thinking about renting a car and searching for something a little out of the way for a day.

I will trade beer for advice:)

Cheers,

Jason

Take a board, it’s the best capital city in Australia for surf. Now that I don’t live there any more, I don’t have a problem with giving away a few secrets…

A trip up to the northern beaches is definitely worthwhile - across the bridge, turn right and don’t stop until you hit Manly. Head north again and follow the coast until you find the right beach (you might even bump into Zackoopman or Surffoils).

If you want to get out of town, head south. Don’t stop until you’ve passed Wollongong. There are so many possibilities within 2-3 hours drive that I’m not even going to try to name any. Just look at Google Maps and go from there.

Head South or North…North of the Hawksberry River has some of the best waves on Earth.

Bring a wetsuit, winter down there now…borrow or rent a board if the waves are decent…Sydney is a stunning city with lots to see and do.

Cheers, roger

Where are you staying? That will help with the decision.

If staying right in the city, check out the “rocks” district for a bit of history ( and some excellent old pubs ). The ferries are pretty good too, head to manly for a bit of a look.

As mentioned, a few hours south or north will be great waves. Plenty of great waves in the city, but crowds might out you off.

Thanks for the help. I Like the idea of just driving until I see some good surf.

I haven’t made hotel reservations yet, but looks like I will be staying right in the city. So definitely will be checking out some pubs.

Thanks!

Jason

15 minutes from the harbour bridge. Super fun right. Can catch the ferry from cicular quay to manly, rent a board on the beach if you wanna surf

The Bower looked bigger than that today. Picks up most swell.

If you’re staying in the city you’re closest beaches are Bondi (the No.1 tourist beach but it has decent waves)

,McKenzies has a specialty left on southerly swells.

Tamarama with lefts off the north reef, Bronte with big rights off the southern reef.

There’s enough there for a lifetime of surfing pleasure.

Hey Guys,

Thanks for all the advice. I didn’t have much time to surf, but did make it out a couple of times. It was perfect timing for me. I got to surf last Tuesday, and it was probably waist high beach break, but fun since it was the first time I had ever surfed with a wetsuit.

I got to surf July 4th too, and found a really nice break which shall not be named, but was on.

I want to say Australia was pretty awesome. The best part was the people. I met some pretty good guys at the hotel I was staying, which was above a bar:) Pretty much everyone was really nice and helpful. Also all the breaks I saw were super short paddles. Was nice to be right there, and no 10 minute paddles.

Back home now, and got to surf my favorite home break on the south shore this morning with the trades booming and a nice s. swell to welcome me back.

Good Times!

40mins north of me by the looks of the first shot. Coal ship too haha

Good to hear you had a great time mate.

Thanks Beerfan, I basically drove south from Sydney and kept on checking out breaks. The one with the guys surfing, it was about 4deg Celsius outside around 8am. Seriously though, I am never whining about cold water on Oahu again…

I didn’t get my wetsuit till later in the day, and surfed near Wollongong.

For anyone visiting, just buy a wetsuit on gumtree when you get there, or craigslist before you go. Renting one is a pain. I missed a bunch of surf because of trying to find a rental place or waiting till they opened.
