This was one of my non-channel prone board projects to create a planing surface with parallel edges and a planshape with curved rails.
I did make one without the channel (didn’t post photo). But it looks exactly like the gray CAD figure.
Parallel planing edges for speed…
thank you, thank you very much, i would never think of doing the chanfers before even tracing the outline, but it makes a lot of sense.
cheers and good waves.
It doesn’t have to be done that way. Just a method for creating a planing surface that is independent from planshape/outline.
IMO I don’t believe believe that Surfcraft (especially Paipos) must have a rounded bottom rail. I think flat chamfers may work just as well or better for bottom rail shape. This is my latest new rail profile direction — a bit radical, probably too radical for most traditionalists.
I will post some more figures today to give you a better grasp of my current, new rail profile direction.
so what is your opinion on the chanfering of the rails on the 70/30 rails.
how will it work for example in a roundhouse cutback in stand up surf?
thanks i am trying to absorb as much as possible but i understand a little, first i will draw a solid project before i start mowing foam on this one.
thank you.
I think the original Lis Fish was about that length, but it was a knee board. I have made several standing wave pool boards that are only 4’ up to 5’ long. For an ocean board a wide fish or mini Simmons might be the best choice.
hey Mr sharkcountry,
my question is when is it too small,
i am 174cms and weight 75 kgs.
will a 4’5 x 22" x 3" thick float me ?
cheers and good waves
Too small is when you can’t get to your feet and ride it, or when you can’t catch the wave. For a knee board or belly board, it can be short, but for a board you stand on it might need to be longer.
I’m 66 and have had a bad left hip since 1997, getting to my feet became an issue. Longer and wider boards help. I will have hip replacement in less than 2 weeks, so I hope I will be able to ride my shorts boards again once I get better. My goal is to be able to ride 19" and 20" wide short boards again. My boards are up to 22" now.
I know guys that stand on Boogey boards, so there is no too short. It all depends on your ability, agility. When is was young, I could stand up on a knee board. We didn’t have Boogey boards back then, just wooden paipos and knee boards.
Shape it and glass it as a half surfboard. Hang it on the wall like it got kicked out through the wall. Or make a chair out of it. I’ve seen both options done. Pissed me off once when some numbskull shop counter hodad made a chair out of a perfectly good used Stretch.
This looks like fun & looks like your blank

hey, cool.
I am still getting my head arround it, Mr. stoneburner really showed me a good line of tought.
I have a good template for a 5’5 mini simmons ( i don’t wanna bogeyboard or kneeboard).
just the issue is that the 1/2 blank is 4’5 so we will jave to skin the blank in an efective way to keep as much foam as possible.
will be posting what is happening.
cheers and good waves
Funny you mention the original steve lis kneeboard fish, i was just looling at it.
cheers and good waves
A little closer to your dimensions:
