whats a surf board?

somethings wrong with this compooter…cant see pics gotta use basic ,oh well…you know the deep swallow fish ? is there any reason the leash plug cant be on the stringer?like maybe 1 or 1 1/2 ‘’ from the crack?..i dont want the leash wraping around one of the pins and getting to be a hasstle or even breaking it…but i have never seen a ridden fish with the plug on left or right that diddnt have that pin broke because of having the plug on itguess it needs re inforcing or not be put there on the pin.

Someone posted pics of a different kind of leash plug that mounts in the center and the leash attaches out the back of the board (instead of on top of the board). I can’t really explain it. I think the patagonia boards have it so you might see it on their website. Might be a good option for fish.

i saw a Rusty twin fish with a fiberglass leash loop right across the meeting-point at the crack that looked great…give it a shot.

It’s called the butt plug. You can read about the it on this thread

http://www.swaylocks.com/forum/gforum.cgi?post=168661

I tried emailing them to order a couple but never got a response. Are they even in production anymore?

…with a name like ’ butt plug’ , they may have been run out of town ?

I put a glass rope leash plug about 2" up from the crack lined up with the stringer. No problems or complaints yet…have fun…

By putting the leash cup on the stringer means you have to take some of the stringer of and doesnt that mean the tail will be less strong and making the board more vunerable to cracking around the tail

in my opinion, putting it on the stringer is the strongest place to put it,especially with a deep swallow tail…like i said i have seen alot of fish with whichever pin the leash was attached, being broke off…when the leash is on the stringer you have foam + wood reinforcing everything…when its not on the stringer you only have foam…of course i wouldnt go drilling and put a leash plug right in the middle of a board but back at the tail i have not seen one ever break straight across there, not much room to flex…on a somewhat unrelated topic,i was telling a guy working in a surf shop, about the resin tints i like to do…and he said yeah, but resin tints make a board heavier…i said, what? its resin on the board anyway, clear or colored, nothing extra to add any weight…i could tell he just has no idea…i dont know how people get these crazy thoughts in their heads.

chip – they named their product the butt plug… guess what they named themselves? A.S.S. (Advanced Sport Systems). These guys are a joke… no wonder I never heard back from them.

Losos,

When I first tried to get hold of them, the e-mail address they have listed on their website bounced back to me as invalid. Try calling them @ 805-549-0299. They got back to me right away, took my order, and shipped the plugs out right away. Very professional !

They have a great idea that works. Other than a loop (for nostalgic’s sake), I wouldn’t install the other type on one of my own boards now. I just routed and installed one that hasn’t been ground down yet. I’ll see if I can post the pic of it.

Best,

Herb Bean

Thanks Herb. It’s great to hear from someone that’s actually had success using them. The concept seems sound, and I hate it when my board is tombstoning (even after that nice hard kick). I’ll try giving them a call.

BTW Herb - have you tried both versions? If so, what’s your preference and why?

Also, both versions look fairly large. Have you run into any problems with trailing fin box installations? I would think a 1/2" future box would run into the plug.

I’ve put the leash plugs to the side behind the crack. No problems yet. Last fish I made a glass leash loop at the top of the crack. So far so good.Mike

Hey Losos,

I have three types on my boards - a loop, tradtional cups, and plugs. Loops are the prettiest and are great when you don’t want to hack a into a really nice tint job or if you’re going for a certain look. Performance wise the tail plug works the best as it does help to dampen the tombstone affect. Installation wise, a plug or cup are about the same. With the plug type the leash exits at the extreme back of the board, and also seems to help keep the leash away from my feet more so.

A.S.S. offer two types: pre and post lamination models - I use the post lam.

I’ve never done the ‘drill through the fin box’ type plug but I imagine it’s pretty much the same as cup - more aesthetically pleasing though.

I have two pre-lam models that I’ll give away for free to whoever wants 'em. First two pm’s with address takes 'em.

Best,

Herb
