What's the deal with User Profiles

I notice that some people put their name on their profiles, where they are from etc etc.

I find this really helpful because when I read a guys post it makes it more reaL and authentic.

I listen to what they have to say because I think " yeah, that bloke is prepared to say that in public and put his name to it".

If I know where they come from it puts it in a geographical and historic context for me.

I was wondering for those who don’t put their name on their user profiles “why not” ?

Is their some sort of Internet privacy thing going on, or would you prefer to remain anonymous.

Just curious.

Steve

Steve…that has always been a mystery to me. If ya can’t put your name on it…I wonder about your crediblity.

Roger

I think it’s mostly an internet privacy thing. Too many bots scouring every forum like this one for names, emails, etc – any personal info.

You put your name AND your email on the same page, and it’s easy logic for a spam bot to send you a very real-looking email.

PMs are the way to go for contact info in all cases, although signing a post wouldn’t be too bad.

Hi Steve - it can also be a bit dangerous. If you’ve ever had someone use your information against you, you will know what I me.

==ep errr ok…

privacy.

i try not to get into threads where knowing who i am makes a difference.

i dont really care if you dont believe what i post.

I agree with you. I wish every one would put their real name and true location.

Na…people believe. You stuff is crazy. You use the darkside very well.

Any chance I could get a couple of my personal boards glassed by you before your untouchable?

Please PM me your prices if you can schedule me in…no rush.

Sorry Darth, you obviously know what you are talking about.

I’m just curious about why someone who cares about privacy would post on the World Wide Web on a public forum.

And if you don’t care if people believe you why bother posting at all ?

The reason I ask is that there is so much info posted on the Web it’s hard to tell whats real and what’s complete BS.

I guess to justify the time I spend on this forum I need to know whether I am actually learning anything.

I know there is alot of integrity and knowledge on this site and I enjoy the diversity of opinion.

Would like to think I could meet people who post, shake their hand and look 'em in the eye.

Some posters from the States seem to have issues with people using their info for nefarious reason so I guess thats fair enough.

Steve

This is a situation I’ve commented on the couple of times the moderators have offered up a vote on changes to Swaylocks.

My opinion is that all the input fields on sign-up should be mandatory - Even then there’s no way to verify them, but the number of times a “Newbie” pops up thinking they might find gullible twats here is disappointing.

On the other hand, some of the humourous posts by the likes of “Psycho” actually contribute to this site…

The only time I’ve copped mail from someone garnering adresses from Swaylocks was the crap Chinese company offering board making services.

That did’nt disturb me because while not appropriate, it was transparent.

This is’nt Facebook…if you sign on there you are asking for it…

Many folks here know who I am…people can do bad things with information via the internet. Some folks don’t want their name passed around on the net. Nothing more than that with many I think. It’s easy to pm and ask.

My real name is Osama…what can I say…Ha Ha…

i totally agree with you that thats what you think.

i came here to share whats possible…push the level.

a Rose by any other name is just as sweet!

who i am and where im from is irrelevent in my opinion.

Micheal Jordan was a great basketball player but i dont need to know where he lives.

the skills are whats important not me!

my anonymity is out of necessity considering how small a fish i am in this big pond.

im not selling my story im telling my story.

pics or it never happened!

I totally agree with what you totally agree, with.

i think its okay not to leave contact details or email address

and also to remain anon if your not posting anything radical

but yeah

i agree steve

if ya cant put ya name on what you publish then your basically a pussie

if you cant own up to what you say or who you may have hurt or offended then your basically a snake

i see this as a online magazine

and everything i publish is like an article

of course i should put my name on it

then that way when i say something really really stupid or dickheadish

i have to cop it like a man

and eat my words

anon guys can be dickheads without the consequences

so therefore there words have no meaning or substance

Thank you, Silly !

Kind regards,

Steve Coletta

I have mixed feelings about this topic. I personally dont care if someone knows who I am, I sign all my posts and I’ll even use my last name. Who cares? What that said, I’m not in the surf industry. The surf industry isn’t much unlike any other very competitive industry. Sometimes well known people with radical ideas and thoughts can suffer serious backlash for making their opinions and ideas known. The beauty of the web is that it does offer anonynimity in a public forum.

I think its a good thing, but like most good things it has potential for abuse and you get the people with internet strength that run their mouth. Take the good with the bad I guess.

Not using your real name…simple really and I am

going to the trouble because some of you really lack an

imagination as to why this needs to be for some people.

Nowadays in the corporate world some people will look for your fingerprint on the internet

to see if your trouble or if there is anything troubling. This includes prospective employers and your present

boss who is considering you for a promotion up the corporate chain.

These kind of searches are rapidly gaining in acceptance for new hires.

Between religiion, politics, recreational activities (for some drugs) or having to get nasty with the trolls who want to yank your chain, who wants that

fingerprint following them. The internet for some of us is more like the ‘Wild West’ than

a fairy tale. Why leave a public footprint.

Suffice it to say, if someone doesnt like my politics, religion, hobbies or something else

than I’m shunted out for no other reason.

Aside from the corporate world.

There is also the issue of High School and other people you’ve met

along the way. Some of us have been popular or very attractive in a previous life.

I for one dont want Sally who I dated briefly from when I was in H.S. or College, who is now 300lbs, trying to find me

by some cheap google search already armed with a solid lead on my hobbies, politics or religion.

There are soooo many reasons why I am anonymous.

Plus I owe people money, not alot…some.

sounds like a wee bit of paranoia there

I have been in hiding since birth .

My parents gave me this Psuedonym

I have been using this cover address

for over thirty years

the best place to hide is out in the open

the best secret spot is where

you tell everybody to come surf

cause you want to share the fun.

…ambrose…

I am not afraid

except maybe the

spy ants…

they are listening to me

when I talk in my sleep.

If they ,the ants, ever find out

who I really am…I’m finished
