hi, longtime reader 1st post, but i recently repaired about a 1/4inch round deep ding in my board using a general repair kit… with some catylist… after sanding I noticed about a 1/16th hole through the repair ( as if someone had used a 1/16th drill into) which i know is not what happened… So since ive tried to patch it a couple more times to try and fill this hole with no luck ( tried using glass, tried hardening the resin quiker) nothings worked yet, just bubbles up underneath and by the time it dries has opened back up… My question WHats the trick to fill this minor lil hole? any help is appreciated… wanna say thanks to swaylocks and the people who make swaylocks work , I have been reading for a couple years now and enjoying reading up and learning new things everyday… thanks
There’s probably a bigger air cavity under that hole which keeps you from sealing over it. Open the hole larger (1/8") and drip resin in with a toothpick until it’s overfilled. If it still won’t fill, open it up to about 3/16" and use some Q-cell mixed with the resin. I would use some cloth over any fill work; it will just fall out later if you don’t.
What pete said, plus try not to do your repair in direct sunlight, which will heat up the board and tend to push any gases in it towards any escape they can find…
One more thought is that you did not get all of the water out of the hole before you tried to repair it. Small holes can also still have wax from the sanding resin on them and the wax will keep the new resin from sticking. I say go with just what the other two guys have said, but after you drill out the hole let it set for a few days to make sure the water is gone. You can even use a hair drier to help speed this up. Good luck
Like the others said, dry it out properly if necessary, open it up if you have to. With small ones like you mentioned, I like to repair it while it is cooling, as the internal air expansion turns to suction, and will draw resin in. Superglue is a good pinhole fixer too.
Try using epoxy putty. It comes in a 2 part stick, so you cut off the end of the stick and knead it together to mix partA/partB then stick it in the hole. Very easy and not messy. It will seal the hole and it will not come out of the hole. It will make a white spot though. You can get it at a marine store or sometimes in the ding repair section at a surf shop/surf supply.
