Literally! Happy Easter all, I am about to airbrush my second board. After the board blank has been painted a base color I want to have an illustrator draw on the board. I am going to have the board glassed elsewhere, so I have 2 questions: 1) Is it common/possible to do illustrations on the foam? Through searching the archives I’ve seen that people draw on the board after it’s been glassed, before a gloss coat but that isn’t a great option since I will be sending the board off for glassing. 2) If drawing on the foam blank over an acrylic base is an option, what’s the best instrument to use? The drawing will be a giant caricature. Thanks all, R.M.
While very complicated work can be done on foam, the problem is the surface is porous and not particularily smooth. Any bleed or mistakes will be difficult to clean up. Painting on a base coat over the foam runs the risk of thick paint interferring with the resin bond. I think, if the drawing is complicated, it would be safer to paint on the sanded hot coat. If this is not possible you could do what custom car painters do and treat the gloss as a base. Just make sure you clean the surface with a degreaser. This method would require some sort of final clearcoat to protect the art work. You could use a clear spray or get an autobody shop to do an auto clear. Hope this helps some. Good luck.
POSCA PENS- AVAILABLE IN PRACTICALLY ANY ART STORE- CK THERE. GOOD LUCK!!!
If you have an illustration, I can print it on rice paper & you can just lam it to the board. Advantage: you won’t chance messing up your shaped blank, the artwork will be perfect, & most glasseser will charge $5.00 or $10.00 extra to set the lam. Size?? up to 40" long one peice.
