when to mark glass-on fins on bottom

hi all.

i’ve done a few searches and have failed to find an awnser to this question:

i’ve been lurking here a long time and finally bought a blank and cut and sanded the template for my 5’8" fish. i haven’t decided on whether it will have double foiled parallel fins or single foiled with toe-in and a little cant but i have decided that i’m going to glass them in. i’ve done a few searches and have failed to find an awnser to this question.

i followed parementer’s “so you wanna shape a board” thing and it says to mark where you want to put the fins ON the shaped blank. but i was thinkin that glass-ons go in after the lamination so doesn’t it make more sense to wait until after the glassing (which i haven’t yet done) to mark WHERE the fins are to go?

thanks for your assistance. i love this website. i will post pics soon, promise.

It just depends if you glass with clear resin or tinted translucent resin or opaque resin. If you glass with opaque, there is no need (obviously) to mark anything on the blank (no dimensions or signature either). Actually, it doesn’t matter much if you glass yourself. Marking on the blank is useful if you send the blank to a glass-shop, so that they know where you want your fins to be.

thanks balsa, i figured as much. i am glassing myself so i’ll wait til after i laminate.

cheers
