when to spray?

im in yr 12 doing my final year of school, and for my major design and tech project im making a surfboard, im just about ready to start, but for my reaserch need to know at what stage do i “spray” the board the colours i want? do i do it straight onto the foam? between layers of glass? i also was wondering if it matters what brand of paint i use, any reccomendations? also i was wondering if there is any specific type of paint to use eg. normal can spraypaint, acrylic, oil based etc. thanks

You can spray the blank with acrylic paints (createx is a common brand that works well, however there are others)before glassing. You can also use water based markers on the foam, it is important thought to test whatever you are going to use with the resin before you put it on the board. If you want to do artwork after you glass and sand the board you can use just about anything. The major thing you are looking for at that point is durability although I did run into a guy that liked to color his board with color crayons, then when he was tired of a design he’d put it out in the sun and once the crayon was melted he’d wipe it off and draw something else. Whatever you do use good masking tape, like 3M 233 on the foam and 233 or fineline (also by 3M) on the glass (for spraying). You could add pigment to the gloss coat, but it scratches and dings easily. Safest for us amateurs is to color the foam. Buy acrylic fabric paint, like Createx, from an art store. Spray it directly onto your shaped blank, then glass over the color.

Stay away from red. In the beginning it seems to be the most difficult to work with. If you put too much on it will crystalize and you will see shiney white spots under the glass. Just my opion. http://www.google.com/

Mask off the foam blank draw your design lightly on the tape. Razor blade the design out and off in stages, adding colors as you go. It still works. But, now we have to take our mothers with us to buy the taggers gold.
