Bill Hamilton was always an archetype for me. Pure style but he could surf with power too. There would be days when he and Jocko would be surfing together and I'd get out of the water and simply watch. He's the real deal. And Milius is just another Hollywood F$%#*er. That industry will never get surfing right. It's all predicated on pretense and performance. To me, the EXACT opposite of what surfing is.

Hears a short story about waxer and a link to watch the movie
Screw that gay movie, and its Hollywood hucksters out to make a buck off of surfing. What Milius did to Bill Hamilton, and the Bear logo, makes me sick. Not too many surfers have ever existed with the soul of Hambone. He is a true surfing icon, and stylist in the first degree. Lyon his son rips too. I had the priviledge to shape a few boards for him in his shop above Hanalei, back in the 80’s so I experienced firsthand, the best from the man. He was just getting some well deserved traction, and the Hollywood fags, and lawyers, jump in to take it away. I hate that kind of crap; they had an agreement and Milius sucking reneged, the greedy bastard. Hollywood surf movies suck, all of them. Hollywood surf movies are for posers.

I was oblivious sorry. I’m keen to know a bit more about waxer and the
skinny kid that lent his board in the hang over seen. Stay cool!
Yup. Greenough nearly gave the Hollywood crew a coronary when he proceeded to dismantle an extremely expensive Arriflex camera so that he could scale it down to fit a water housing of his liking.
After the film flopped, Hamilton started the Bear label. He expanded it from surfboards to clothing and such. I had an early Bear T-shirt that had " © Billy Hamilton" under the logo, in fact. After the label became successful Milius decided he wanted the rights. With the backing of Warner Bros Films he sued Hamilton and won. Hamo didn’t have the funds to battle a Hollywood bigshot and a studio in court. He was screwed, basically.
ok. i was under the impression milius came up with the bear logo and boards for the movie.if so, did he just let it go after the film and once hammo started it up and was doing well with it milius cried foul?
i got the story. you guys should get the facts straight.
to answer the question about the character masochist-yea, based, again loosely, around a character that was known as the masochist. not a “true” malibu regular, but surfed the malibu zone lke sunset, topanga, malibu and such.
My friend Brit Horne, son of legendary Kit Horne did the water patrol for the movie. This weekend he’s coming down and we’re going to going to barbeque at his mom’s house. Britt’s the real deal, and you wont find a better waterman in California. They should do a movie on Kit Horne; I miss that man; he was there at the 'Bu, before all the Hollywood Gidget BS screwed it up. Thing is with surfing, its hard to tell the real from the fake, and there has always been posers. My stripes have always been earned and not from a bottle of peroxide, and tanning salon; when you really get it, the phony is just empty calories, with no nutrional value. Still some live only through what they see on a screen, and never really do anything of significance other than serve as tinder for another’s fire. Brit Horne is to California what Teene Froiseth is to Hawaii.
This barely scratches the surface of the man… Brit Horn: Lifeguard Russian River District
there are a few from kit’s era they could do movies on. don’t find many like them around anymore…
