Where is the Basswood?

I’m in NYC and looking for Basswood sized large enough for stringers.

Anyone locally have a spot?

Or anyone else have a good mail order supplier?

Thanks.

hey rickrickrick,

check this site out. I have found it helpful in locating different species of wood.

Hey Rick

I have some uncut 4/4 basswood at the shop.

Let me know if you’re interested in some.

P.S. I know what you’re getting from your inlaws this holiday

Take it easy

If your having a hard time location basswood just use 1/8" ply from lowes or hd?

I can get timbers of Bass all day long on the west coast. Not worth the shipping cost to the east coast.

Use the ply instead. If you neee 1/4" just double layer.

Ha!

I’m having so much trouble finding 1/4". I hate wasting it all through the planer.

But just let me know dims and cost of what you have.

Thanks.

Do you need a stringer cut and sent to you?

I really just want a place to buy and cut my own.

According to a price sheet that i have they stock Basswood in 1/4" thickness. Call for a quote.

Thanks!

Ice Nine will cut custom or stock basswood stringers for you - they will sell you stock at the thickness/width/length you want so you can trace and cut out your own templates too. If the boards are under 8’ i think they can ship it UPS so it shouldnt cost too much.

Summit Hardwood will do the same. Both are in California …

You should be able to find some rough stock of basswood at a local lumberyard - look in the yellowpages - and a wooden boatbuilding shop or cabinetmaker’s shop should have the tools needed (planer, jointer, bandsaw) to resaw some stringers - probably need an ‘in’ with a friend to make that happen though…but a unique project and a 6 pack can usually spark up a friendship pretty quickly…
