Hello swaylockers… its been a while since I’ve posted but I have thoroughly enjoyed the threads over the last year or so… Anyway… My 9’4" noserider (after being side lined for 2 years) had its first hot coat the other night - did the deck and rails in one hit…
what a disaster!!! hahaha - I have to say it with a smile
for my first board its been ok but not great - problems started when I used the wrong catalyst for the deck lam - my fault for not reading the label and hey presto - 7 min pot life. Thankfully I have glassing exp so I got it all down except for the rails which I intended to grind back and reglass.
mistake number 2 as I cut through to the foam and had to fill some areas and reglassed rails with 1 x 75mm tape 1 x 100mm tape - nice and strong - very lumpy lam
So I figured that I would put a nice thick hot coat on and sad smooth… and that’s where I’m up to…
I have under-estimated the amount of sanding and need to make a decision:
- Do I sand as close to the weave as I can and re-hot coat the deck hoping to fill the rails a little more, get the rails perfect and then hot coat the bottom (what’s the fix if you hit the weave?)
or
- Do I sand and mask off the deck (this is looking good) and hot coat the bottom going over the rails again?
what to do with lumpy rails… do I say screw it and get the board in the water asap or do I go for perfection and spend some more long hours getting it right?
Due to the LOOONG time its taken me to finish the board its yellow and dirty but I kind of like it… looks like a nasty old board from the 70’s. I’ll probably colour the base and up over the rails then line art/pencil sketch on the deck over the yellowing glass/foam. I’m happy with the shape (traced a friends wingnut noserider, added a diamond tail and touched the nose to a very slight point)
No photos yet - still too ugly :))
they will come tho!
thanks for reading!
