Where to rent a 4x4 in Costa Rica

I’m going on Feb. 20th.Where is the best/cheapest place to rent a 4x4 near the airport? I’ve gotten quotes as much a $500 for 8 nights. Someone mentioned a small company but I ccan’t rember the name?

Howzit ekim, There is no such thing as a reasonable priced car rental in C.R. and you want to rent from a reputable company. I have some real horror stories about rentals there. Aloha,Kokua

Thanks Ko. I know this should’nt be in the shaping section. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Kokua’s right…rent from a reputable company.

I’ve been renting 4x4’s in C.R. for 15 years and have had great service from Economy (searech online “Economy Costa Rica”). If I’ve ever had a problem, they’ve sent someone to either fix it on the spot or give me a new vehicle - no questions asked and pretty quickly too. They have offices around the country so you’re never far from help.

National is also a good choice.

Tip: If you can, use American Express to rent with as they will cover your comprhensive insurance saving you $10 to 20/day… You have to get the mandatory liability ins. though = $10/d. They charge the crap out of you for any damage no matter how slight and Am. Ex. will pay it w/ no charge to you. I got an Am.Ex. card just for this purpose.

When you do pick up your vehicle, DO pay attention doing the pre rental vehicle check for existing damage. Point out any scratches/dents no matter how slight so they don’t try to hit you up for them on return.

Have fun - just got back from 2 week trip. Had waves everyday…

Economy & National.Thanks. Where were you surfing? I’m going to be in Playa Dominical.I’m afraid it’s going to be pretty flat this time of year.I bought a Kane Gardens 6’0" Quad fish just for this trip. Waiting to see the swell models & decide if I should bring my regular short board or not?

Ekim,

I’m based up on the Nicoya peninsula - never been down to Dominical. Waves I saw this trip ranged from 3 to 10+ ft. faces. Would always recommend taking 2 boards for that reason.

Swell models are O.K. but the C.R. coast is such that a few degrees difference in swell angle can make a big difference in whether a swell makes it in to your break. Plus, being only 9 degrees north of the equator, there’s always the possibility of the odd southern hemi. swell this time of year before it wakes up for real in a couple of months.

You might be surprised…have fun.
