Which blanks??

     Hi,

Just joined and im after some advice on blanks before jumping in and buying a couple. Im looking at doing a board along the lines of a mini simons approx 5'8" by 23" and a style of board called a friekiod by ectic concepts. This board would be similar dimensions and both as thick as i can get. i live in the uk and there is a couple of suppliers one is seabase and does us blanks and the other is called homeblown with a mixture of blanks.

Im not sure what sort of blank i should be looking at getting and have had no feed back from the suppliers and im now keen to get on and get them ordered. any advice would be great on this also any advice on the simons hulls.

Cheers Sam

Before any one destroys me, simmons! Spelling is never my strong point. Also i shaped a board about 7 years ago and thats my only experiance so you could call me a newbie.

A longboard blank moved back and cut out of the center or a fish blank.  Midget's Surfblanks are available Down Under.  Surfblanks America and US Blanks are both available in the US.  All are good foam.  Availability depends on your locale.

Thanks. I can get US blanks. I guess the bigger and thicker the better to be able to get what you want out of it? US Blanks Have a small fish blank 5'10" butg is 25" wide. Just under 3" thick. Was not Sure if that is a possibility?

Go for the best rocker and don’t worry too much about squeezing out the maximum thickness.  The basic Simm template and foil packs a huge amount of foam into the length.  I think length is a bigger consideration.  In general the shorter you go the more judgment and timing are required.   I you have the skill to deal with a given length the volume and surface area of the template will almost certainly be plenty to get you into your waves.

Im happy with getting the template for the out line correct but what does bother me is getting the bottom correct as i do not have the chance to actually look at one so it will be very hit and miss. Do you have any ideas of how to get over this problem?

Lemuel. Make sure your wide point and the bottom apex is forward of center. Short bars = wider stance so keep the flats between the feet. Keep it flat and soft up front and all edgy in the back. Like a mullet haircut.  I would look at a US 6’5A if I was doing that bar. I would want to find a nice long flat section of the flattest fish blank around. Find the apex and fit the template to the center. I would think 3 to 4 inches forward of center. I’m more a fishy kind of guy. Good luck

Cheers all the advice is really helpfull.
