Which board would you take to New Zealand?

Excellent site, Silly. Never seen it before.

Also check out http://www.surf2surf.co.nz/reports/index.php I think you have the right idea for boards to bring. Mal, thruster, bonzer or fish - either one. Taranaki and Gisborne are great N island spots for consistent surf. The South Island has some great surf but way too cold for me. The far North where i live can be magic on it’s given day. PM me if you are going to be up this way.

Jon

Sidestreet, you say you have a surfcase?

i had the 9’6 longboard case, meant to hold three longboards, but only held two comfortably. it was also impossible to fit even one longboard in there with a shortboard of any shape as the rockers were too different and the case doesn’t flex or move like a bag would. its still worth it to have one if your boards are sort of similar in their rockers because they then fit and you dont have to worry about the airlines screwing your things up.

i also had teh 7’3 tripple calse meant for thrusters, only held two floaty 80’s style thrusters and 3 very thin modern shortboards, but it was a squeeze.

you cant fit a combonation of boards in those things, it doesnt work.

Aloha Swaylockers-

I’m 1 week into my NZ trip.

I ended bringing a log, a fish, and a bonzer. The bonzer has not been used, since no waves were overhead. Mostly chest to shoulder stuff.

Raglan: logging and fishing at 3-5’

Coromandel: flat

Gisborne: logging and fishing: 2-4’

I have really enjoyed Gisborne- great conditions, so many breaks, and so uncrowded. You Kiwis are so lucky… I wish I was here to see Makarori Point firing. Will probably have to wait…

…Moving on. More reports later!

Hey Sidestreet,

Glad you are having fun in NZ. I’m a Kiwi (currently in Victoria AU) and have surfed in Raglan and Gisbourne a bit. Took a quick look at the weather map - looks like there’ll be waves on both coasts in the next few days -east windswell hitting Bay of plenty and east coast north of there - winds don’t look that great though. Looks like good waves at Raglan on Friday with swell jacking up on Sunday - Shipwreaks might be a really good place to be on Sunday, likely to be offshore up there while Raglan will probably be big, stormy and cross -shore. Any Kiwi Swaylockers concur with that itinerary for Sidestreet?

hey sidestreet, dunno about up north, but kaikoura was 8ft+(tripleoverhead on the big ones) on anzac day. a mate showed me some video of it wow. glad to hear your getting some waves.

Dunno if I’ve got time to go all the way to Shipwrecks. My options are wait for the winds to die down here in Whitianga, or go for it and drive to Raglan again with these SE winds. Right now, I’m holed up a friend’s place. The hospitality and relaxation here is a big de-motivator to leave.

I must say: you guys here in NZ have some serious fortune under your feet. Great waves, great crowds, and no nonsense/pretense that I see at home in Hawaii and on my visits to California.

I’m praying for good winds tomorrow.

Right now, I’m reading an intersting article on Roy Stewart’s 13 foot Dragon board in NZ Slide magazine. Interesting explanations. That board looks pretty hardcore!

Sidestreet,

Check http://www.buoyweather.com/wxnav.jsp?region=NZ&program=Maps east coast doesn’t look good but Raglan looks like it’ll be epic on Monday. Do you know anyone there?

Pinhead- I surfed Manu last night. overhead-double overhead on the sets. Unbelievable. Kiwis ripping all over. Must have got sprayed 10 times or so paddling over shoulders. Got to try my bonzer for the first time in 10 days. I’ll be leaving Monday. I’m going to try to wait for that huge swell on Sunday…

Aloha,

Sidestreet

Woohoo, Stoked for you Sidestreet. I can see you getting on the plane with a big smile on your face. Love to see some pics and a report on how your boards went.

Cheers,

Pinhead

Sidey!
