Hello everyone. I’m building a loose copy of Tom Morey’s Beater board by CatchSurf as sort of a summer/small wave type of deal. Theirs is 4’6", mine is just over 5’0". I originally thought of doing a twin setup, but they sell it as a finless or single fin. I think I am going to keep it simple and just do like a small keel single fin. Problem is, I never did a single fin board before and I can’t decide on how big of a fin to use…or where to buy it. I definitely want to glass it on, but none of the shops around here sell any. I used to do business with fiberglass supply.com but now they don’t sell any glass on singles anymore. What do you guys think?[img_assist|nid=1054592|title=beater|desc=here it is…sorta|link=none|align=left|width=62|height=100]
Buy the fin of your choice with a base fitted for a fin-box. Cut the base off. Glass the fin on. Or make your own from plywood and add several layers of glass on each side. As for dims…
thats a great idea. so simple, but i never even considered that. What size do you think I should use? I don’t want to spin out, but I definitely don’t want too much fin.
I use a george greenough fin on almost all of my boards. The wide base and narrow tip give drive without getting stiff. At 5’0 I’d say a 6"-7" fin of that shape would be fun. Greenough made alot of small boards so a little research on his theories could help. Out of cruiousity, why are you set on glassing the fin on? I usually go with a box set up out so I can bump up to a bigger fin if I want to push the upper limit of a board or mess around on a summer day.
I run www.waveridersfingallery.com and we can get glass on fins if you find one you want. All th e Rainbow and Torres fins are offered as glass ons, and I can contact the other companies if you see one you like.
use box or plugs to have options or finless...start with one you think might work, then adjust for your riding pleasure and or variety....
