I have already decided on some things but not which shape. I want to built a board in two peaces (like the bisect) out of extrudedPolystyrol with epoxy shell. I am now riding a shortboard that is way too much for my ability (6’0;18";2"; swallowtail) in the surf. I only surf ~4weeks/year in waves, sometimes on riverwaves and most of the time behind a motorboat (thats what the swallowtail is great for). Got two other boards…a Safari Spyder which is 6’6" and really thick and heavy…I hate that board…and a LocalMotion Board 6’6" with great rails…not as wide as the safari…hm, maybe I do prefere the slimmer shapes. Now I want to built myself a travelboard. Something like a max. 8’ MiniMal, Funshape, Hybrid… Something elegant, wide,…gliding is the word [smile]) I am 177cm, 65kg. I should also be suitable for towing behind the boat. I tent to ride on my backfoot but also snowboard a lot so maybe something neutral would suit my style. Is there a place to get plans or do shapers just not give out there lines? I have no idea of how to shape the rails and how much rocker is needed (I need to know this to first to buy foam). cheers Marcus
Hey Marcus, me again. Find a picture of the shape you like, from a mag, internet, whatever. Print it, enlarge it a bit if necessary, then grid it, like an artist does. That should give you measurable co-ordinates for what you are looking for planshape wise. As far as rocker goes it’s a bit more difficult, but I guess you could probably do the same. The main thing is when shaping it, make sure you smooth out everything, don’t leave any lumps or bumps. Make sure every line flows into the next. Use big, semi-rigid sanding blocks. Use the other boards you have for rail shape examples, take particular note on how it changes from the nose to tail, even use some sort of square to check the height, depth, roundness and edge, and their relativity to the outermost point of the rail. I’ll expect some outside critisism for this, but it is your first board, and if you take your time I’m sure it will come out okay. Good luck and I’m sure you will have fun. Greg.
hm…rocker is my concerne. I can get 100mm Foam.that would be enough for a flat shortboard but would it work on a 7’-8’ minimal? I could glue the 2 panels together at an angle which would give me another 2cm-4cm nose rocker…but how much do I need? And where does the rocker start? In the last 1/3? Is the rocker curve an even one or is it rather flattened out in the midsection? cheers Marcus. http://fluid.kajakworld.at/fluidworld3/3d/3d.htm
sorry…posted pics and urls from my last post…
